Winning the group is good and all, but all the teams in Group D are so bad, that it really doesn't matter if we finish 1st or 2nd. We're going to finish tied with Jamaica on points, just a matter of GD.

Doesn't winning the group mean ducking Mexico and/or Canada until the final probably?

Jamaica only won 4-1 so I kinda like our chances to have a superior GD based on the first 20 minutes…

Winning the group may mean playing (a really shitty) Canada in the first knockout match.

Group winner gets Mexico in the final. Runner-up gets them in the semis:

This is like watching Week 12 of the SEC football schedule. Everyone is playing FCS teams before Rivalry week

Great. Now we’re going to hear for the next three years how Ferreira has 30 goals when 25 of them are against teams ranked below 100.

I'd take Dan Mullen at halftime over Lalas.

You need to relax and just enjoy this for what it is.

the most interesting part of tonight's match is going to be the USA goalkeeper uniform vs. the chyron computer that generates the ad behind the goal line

Is this field not a standard 120x80? It looks very narrow on tv, which would be weird for a soccer specific stadium.

There are no specific dimensions for a pitch. FIFA has mandated minimums and maximums for both pitch length and width. I vividly remember the field dimensions changing at the LA Galaxy facility between two January friendlies under Klinsmann; you could see the lines the ground staff tried to erase and didn’t do too good a job at it.

John Hackworth, the SLCSC head coach, is a college classmate of mine. I’ll ask him about the pitch dimensions when I talk to him again. But teams are notorious for monkeying with the pitch dimensions to give them an advantage.

correct... there are minimums and maximums that you have to fall between to be rated for whatever level of soccer it's designed to be used for... but there is not one set dimension a playing surface must be

think of it as the outfield walls distance from home plate for baseball and softball

and yes... a coach will build a team around the dimensions of the pitch or vice versa

Jalen Neal is already one of our best ball-playing CB's in the whole pool.

Still raw in a lot of other areas, but he better be starting in the Olympics.
