Can you take a pitcher off tge mound and move him to a position player then move him back later. I thought you could not. ESPN just talked about it.They said Sully asked the umps this question and they said you could. Always thought once the pitcher leaves the bump he can’t return.

You can.
Ben McDonald did it.
It was also prominently featured in the 50s movie "The Kid from Left Field"

Yes why wouldn’t you be able to?
If he’s never substituted out then he is still in the game.

The question came up b/c of the 7th mound visit.... is the penalty the pitcher must leave the game,,, or leave the mound?

Interesting question. Could just move him to an Of spot for one pitch then put him back in. Of course you lose whichever player he replaces in rhe field, but the P more important at that point with the lead

He has to make a pitching change. I assume he could have moved his pitcher to LF or something if he wanted to.
Problem is, I doubt any coach would do that on the fly like Florida would have had to do. If you gameplan for it, sure.

If you move him, someone has to go to the bench.
As in wherever you put him.

Seems like you could swap pitcher with an outfielder, have the outfielder throw an intentional ball the next pitch, then swap them back.
