The decision was made months ago. But as of yesterday, it’s official…

Wonder if the troops will give it the nickname “Fort Dick” or something similar?

The Army officially renamed Fort Polk in Louisiana as Fort Johnson on Tuesday in honor of a Medal of Honor recipient, as part of the latest in its string of renaming military bases that had recognized Confederate leaders.
The fort, which is officially taking the name of Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and Fort Johnson, was designated in honor of Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a Black World War I veteran who has received acclaim for single-handedly fighting off a group of raiding German soldiers and saving a fellow soldier from being captured.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of Congress the Medal of Honor to
Private Henry Johnson
United States Army
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:
Private Johnson distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a member of Company C, 369th Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during combat operations against the enemy on the front lines of the Western Front in France on May 15, 1918. Private Johnson and another soldier were on sentry duty at a forward outpost when they received a surprise attack from a German raiding party consisting of at least 12 soldiers. While under intense enemy fire and despite receiving significant wounds, Private Johnson mounted a brave retaliation, resulting in several enemy casualties. When his fellow soldier was badly wounded, Private Johnson prevented him from being taken prisoner by German forces. Private Johnson exposed himself to grave danger by advancing from his position to engage an enemy soldier in hand-to-hand combat. Wielding only a knife and gravely wounded himself, Private Johnson continued fighting and took his Bolo knife and stabbed it through an enemy soldier's head. Displaying great courage, Private Johnson held back the enemy force until they retreated. Private Johnson's extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

You can call me Polk. You can call Fort. You can call me Fort Polk, but you doesn't have to call me Johnson.

At least they are renaming the base after a hero and not some PC person.

Private Henry Johnson seems like a real hero.

I was stationed a Fort Polk briefly after the First Gulf War. The main thing I remember is during the summer, every day between 2-3 in the afternoon it would come a freaking deluge. Then as quick as it came, the rain was gone, the clouds were gone, and the sun, heat, and humidity were just brutal. Within minutes everything had steam coming off it, including us.

This made me chuckle.
Seems like they chose a worthy person to name it after. I figured they'd name it Fort Rachel Levine or some shite.

Slap in the face to all who served before.

Sure he did. Bet he did it with one arm tied behind his back.

All of the Sleesville strippers are going to have to update their resumes to "proudly serving the soldiers of Ft Johnson"

It is a lot better than "Fort Liberty" that they chose for Bragg

My son is stationed at Fort Benning. They went though their official renaming a couple weeks ago. It’s now Fort Moore, after Gen. Hal Moore. I think it’s quite fitting they rename the fort after him. He was a genuine hero.
The one that baffles me though is Fort Bragg. They renamed it Fort Liberty. It’s the freaking home of the Airborne. Why give it such a generic name when there are a myriad of famous, well deserving Airborne soldiers to choose from to name the fort after?

This should solve a lot of problems facing our nation
