Headed to Banff in July…. Is it better to get Canadian dollars from my bank before going? Or get Canadian dollars when we arrive?

I'd have a little in your pocket when you arrive but just get the rest from the ATM as you go.

Use an ATM to withdraw money once you get there. Most places don't want your cash and many won't accept it. CC is the standard way to pay for most everything

Nobody uses cash in Canada. Like these baws said just get a few bucks out of an ATM and don't over think it

Just make sure your debit card doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. 100% on the ATM at the destination airport for pocket cash.
Do not take out more than maybe USD100 for tips for bellmen, etc.

You should be able to use your normal Visa and Mastercard credit cards everywhere. And they will typically give you a little better exchange rate than ATMs.

Beware with this advice. There are MANY Visa and MCs that carry foreign transaction fees. Generally, withdrawing ATMs comes with some small extra fees as well but there are some checking accounts (Priority with Hancock Whitney for example) that covers any extra fees for ATM withdrawals not at your bank.
