Yes, they could go to 4 divisions, but there is no provision that would allow them to have a 4 team playoff to decide the conference champion.
So? You don't have to have a 4 team playoff just like you don't have to have a CG in a single division.
The only real difference is the single division is a true cream rises to the top model with only one winner. With the 4 division model there are at least 4 winners of something and that has value in a system that has so little parity.
Anyway, my point wasn't to argue for one over the other, but to suggest you shouldn't self constrain your thinking.

You make good points, but I was taking it as a given that the conference would continue to have a CG. I have seen no suggestion otherwise and the conference isn’t likely to give up the revenue. They could still have a CG with 4 divisions, but in that situation the divisions are really only artifices for scheduling purposes. They have no actual meaning from a conference standings perspective. It would effectively be the same as a single division.

So 15 conference games?
Otherwise, the shortened schedule makes a difference.

What if you have two undefeated teams at the top of the single division? Two 12-0 teams, what is the tiebreaker? Co-champions? Like the old days when a committee determined which SEC school would represent the conference when they had equal records?
In a 16 team single division, each team does not play 7 other teams.
