Long story short my 11 pound Maltese Poodle mix has an injury to his leg that is covered in blood.

Based on video footage he limped in the dog door at 6:45 then limped to the bedroom at 6:53. We found him under the bed at 8:30. Zero blood trail.

His leg was swollen and bleeding so we thought it might be a snake bite. Gave him some benadryl and drove to the vet. Once there my wife mentioned snake bite and lo a d behold that's what they think it could be.

Estimate for treatment came out to $2700.

I'm of the mind to just take him home, but the wife wants to treat him. She's currently trying to negotiate a lower price.

Any experience with something like this? What should I do?

Tough call. Id like to think the dog will pull through. He’s still alive now. Breathing good? What’d the X-ray show? What do they do for 2700?

He was fine on the drive to the vet. Breathing normal. Swelling had gone down a little since we found him.

Vet's office is saying blood is leaking profusely in their exam room, but no blood anywhere in my house or on the towel we wrapped him in.

Being a smaller dog, I would let the vet treat your pet. Treatment will most likely depend on what kind of snake bit your dog potentially. Being that y’all don’t know, your vet could potentially take a wait and see approach to treatment. Could be as little as IV fluids and Benedryl injections or a full work up with blood work. I hope all goes well. BTW, worked at a vet for more than 15 years as a Tech

Don’t recall many snake bites bleeding profusely in my time unless it hit vein or artery in which case your dog would be in a lot worse shape than what you are making it sound like.

I would be interested in if they did X-rays or not. This is sounding more like another dog or animal could have potentially gotten a hold of your dog. Any chance of that? Just wondering

Man that’s a tough call. I’ve dealt with bird dogs being snake bit my whole life. Actually had a short hair get bitten a few weeks ago by a copperhead in the carport. All I can say is that if it cost you $2700 to keep the wife from losing a dog, you’ll come out ahead spending the money.

No experience with small dogs, but I’ve had several walker hounds get bit, and a lab that got bit more than once. Unless they were running and had their heart rate up they would be ok. Did lose one to a rattlesnake, though. At least that’s what I think got her.

No X-rays. They swabbed the area and said the red blood cells showed signs of bursting so they associated that with a snake bite.

His was literally in our fenced in back yard for 37 seconds based on the video footage we have.

My oldest son searched the entire backyard and didn't see any sign of a snake.

My biggest issue is would they have come to that diagnosis if we hadn't mentioned a potential bite because we didn't know what happened?

Vet came out to talk to us. Knocked the price down to $1400.

It's a Christmas miracle they were able to save him by slashing the estimate in half.

I've had lots of dogs get bitten by cottonmouths, but the smallest one was probably 30 pounds or so. They all recovered fine within about a day with no veterinary treatment.

Dogs seem to handle snake bites extremely well. I wouldn't stress about it.

What treatments were done? Did they shave down the dog's leg to get a better look at the wound? Can you post pics?

I had several beagles bitten by snakes that I suspected were copperheads(didn’t actually witness). They all recovered without treatment in a couple days.

Yeah, if it’s bleeding significantly, doubt it’s a snake bite. Probably just got into a fight with another dog, but who knows. I know, I’m not paying 3 grand for an unknown cause of injury that’s not structural, and just speculation on cause…

In your OP you say the leg is covered in blood, but in a secondary post you say no blood at your house, car, towels.

Which is it?

That's the thing.

This vet is an after hours emergency room that won't let owners inside with their pets.

I feel like I am getting fricked royally because I can't put eyes on him to verify what they are saying.

Blood is literally isolated to his body. He was under my bed for almost 2 hours and there is a single drop of blood on the carpet.

I carried him throughout the house without a towel after I found him and no blood dropped on the floor that I can find. It looked to me like the bleeding had stopped.

If you took your car into a mechanic and they gave you a $2700 estimate, then came out an hour later and said it's actually only going to be $1400, you would be recommending that mechanic all over TigerDroppings.

Yeah.

The difference is this isn't my normal vet being after hours.

He'd probably charge me $400 for the anti-venom and send him home.

This place said they had to provide "intense nursing care" after administering the anti-venom to make sure his vitals didn't drop.

I had a dog take a pit viper bite to the dome... he barely survived with multiple vials of anti venin. The estimate was about as high as your figure. Was around 70 pounds, pit/shar pei mix. That excess shar pei skin swole to the max, his head was damn near basketball sized. I spent days transferring him between the emergency vet and my regular vet clinic, around their operating hours.

My dog was so fricked up by the venom, all the IV fluid was leaking out of his veins and "3rd spacing." Just adding to his excessive swelling. Had to switch up to hetastarch.

Since my incident, almost 20 year ago, there have been some good improvements in snake bite pet recovery. Hyperbaric chamber has done great and electric stimulation to prevent necrosis in the immediate bite area.
