Given some of the issues at the base, I figured they could have used a synonym and gone with Ft Thug.

If any base could use a fresh start it’s this one but so fricking stupid and waste of money.

Meh. If Hood had some other notoriety beyond being a pretty subpar Confederate officer, I might object. He was an objectively bad officer to name such a prestigious post after.

Hood was far from the best officer in the Confederacy, but he was still better than anyone the Union had to offer. He gave both an arm and a leg for the cause and he was always on the front lines as he led his men. I have walked the fields of Antietam where Hood lost almost half his men in a single day.
The attempts and desires to destroy American history should never be accepted.

When Hood commanded the Army defending Atlanta up to create a diversion in Tennessee, Sherman quipped that if he did that he'd provide his provisions.

The reason those forts were named after Confederate generals was to get Southern boys whose families still remembered the Civil War to join up for WWI. They certainly weren't going to go sign up for Fort Lincoln or Fort Sherman.

I hope the southern boys take that in consideration when the next “conflict” arises. Any white male joining the armed forces is not in their best interests.
