Bathroom Vent Problems

I have a DSLD home and my bathrooms are set up where if the light is on, the vent is also on. It’s obviously had a lot of run time in the 3 years I’ve lived here. I’ve noticed it is beginning to rattle like a potential bad bearing. Any ideas on what to check and how to check that out?

Am I the only one that rarely uses a fan in the bathroom?
If I were you, I'd almost swap out that light/fan combo with just a light.

I think a lot of places it's code now to have a vented bathroom unless you have a window. Mostly for humidity and mold prevention and not so much for smelly shits.
I have one fan which is doing the same as the OP and i will probably get around to switching it to one where the fan only comes on when the moisture/humidity level is high enough.

Most bathroom vent fan motors are plug and play. Take the vent cover off. Remove 2-4 screws that hold the fan motor in place. Unplug the fan motor. Order new motor using fan/motor/model # on fan motor. Replace and put cover back on.
You could also try vacuuming out all the dust and spaying some white grease in the bearing area.

in most cases you take the light bulb cover off, usually snaps or clips in place. depending on the design, you may need to remove the light bulb first and the screw under it to get to the fan. then you unplug the fan and remove one screw and that lets you remove the fan. you then clean the dust off the blades and add a drop or two of 3 in 1 oil to the bearings and then reinstall it. that usually makes it good as new again

Well said above, a vacuum and some oil usually fixes them. I don’t know about the two in ones but the regular fans are very easy to replace the motors.

Can try cleaning, adding a little lube spray. If not, bring it to an electrical motor repair shop. All else fails, buy a new one, plug in a new motor.

I use the fan every time I walk in the bathroom just for the white noise.

The bathroom vent light should have 3 wires. White, Blue, and Black. White is always neutral. Black is for the light, Blue for the fan. Installer connected the black and blue together to one switch. Probably to save money, switch, wire and labor times a 1000. Inspector really shouldn't allow this combining a motor circuit with a light circuit.

I really don't know who downvoted you, but you're right. It's just like a ceiling fan. You can split the light and the fan off into two different switches.
