On3: 2023 Defensive Line/Edge Unit Rankings

6. LSU
The Tigers’ defensive line has as much upside as any front-line group in the country in the fall. They have to replace BJ Ojulari and Ali Gaye on the edge, but they bring back sophomore phenom Harold Perkins Jr., who had 8.5 sacks and 14 TFLs last season but could end up playing a lot inside so we’ll see.
Texas transfer Ovie Oghoufo and 5-star freshman Dashawn Womack are other edge options, while LSU’s interior unit should be much better with the return of potential 1st Round pick tackle Maason Smith, who blew out his ACL early in Week 1 against FSU last year.
They also have All-SEC tackle Mekhi Wingo, Sai’vion Jones and death pieces like Arizona transfer Paris Shand and 320-pound nose tackle Jacobian Guillory.
LSU ranked in the middle of the SEC in run defense and TFLs in 2022, and with a deeper, more experienced group, I expect both figures to improve this fall.

Solid spot, and if everyone stays healthy we should be pretty nasty.

Sure hope FSU's 1st round dlineman doesn't live inside JD's arse like he did last year when we played them

LSU is 6th in the nation, but 3rd in the SEC.

You don't think Will Campbell has this game circled on the calendar

UGA at 1 may be a lazy take, especially losing bear Alexander.

Stating the obvious here, losing Maason Smith really hurt last season so this group could potentially be really good.

HP played Jack for one game last season, and people act like he spent the entire season there.

Stopping the run is key. Only one Championship Team in the last 10 years finished outside the top 25 in Rushing Defense. Five finished either 1 or 2. All five were programs that have repeated in the last 10 years.
National Rank - Rushing Defense (YPG)
2022-23 - Georgia - 1 (81.2)
2021-22 - Georgia - 2 (80.1)
2020-21 - Alabama - 15 (113.1)
2019-20 - LSU - 23 (126.9)
2018-19 - Clemson - 2 (94.9)
2017-18 - Alabama - 1 (91.7)
2016-17 - Clemson - 23 (135.4)
2015-16 - Alabama - 1 (69.7)
2014-15 - Ohio State - 31 (141.7)
2013-14 - FSU 10 (111.1)

I hope so. Will be fun to watch!

I don’t think FSU did near as much damage to LSU as LSU did to themselves. When LSU was screwing themselves they were unstoppable against FSU. Look at the last TD of the game.

Agree to a point but at the same time we are at 6 based on the strength of a LBs name, a Dt that played 1 quarter of football last year, a true freshman and a bunch of guys that moved on from their previous stops for lack of playing time. Which seems the bigger reach to you?

But supposedly 5 of the top 10 are Big 10 teams?!

They are at 1 based on how much returning production? They still have depth and players, but they dont have a Jalen Carter nor an elite experienced edge rusher. Maason smith at full health is better than any of their defensive tackles
