I'd bet that in ten similar events where someone is carrying and someone isn't, the one carrying survives more often. Even if it's only 2 or 3 times, there's a difference.

1. No one would ever say that carrying makes you safe, it just gives you an edge, vigilance is key.
2. It’s better to have an edge than not regardless of the chance of success.

I have before had a guy try to approach me when out on a trail (clearly not a runner/hiker) who walked away when he saw I was armed.

In your scenario, if the weapon is visible, why would a criminal target an armed person when they can wait for an unarmed person?
