Anyone ever had an acoustic guitar refinished?

I have a locally built acoustic guitar (Torrified Adi top, East Indian rosewood back & sides) that I love the sound and look of, only problem is the builder did not have the finishing process down very well and the nitro is peeling majorly. It also didn't help that I changed the pickguard and more of it came up with that.
What are my options for having it refinished?

Kind of worried about cracking as I live in the Midwest where we run heaters half the year.
It's majorly flaking on the headstock and probably 25% of the top is down to raw wood.

The best guitar I've ever played, was built 20 years ago( at least) by Larry Crozier, specifically for a guy I know, named Roger Hammett.
The were trying to decide the finish, but the guitar is so good, Roger didn't want to mess it up. They just put sealer on it. It aint pretty, but it's bad arse.

Keep it in the case, in a closet, until you are going to play it.

Is the builder an option? He’s either better at it now or sources it out to someone.

Google Trigger and Willie Nelson

Trigger was a proper finished guitar that Willie played the piss out of. Maybe more than any other guitar.
The OP has had his for a couple years or so.
I’d be looking at a refinish too. Especially if I loved the guitar.
OP I’d bet you’re talking 100’s of dollars and 2-3 weeks to do it properly.

I honestly prefer more of a satin feel so wouldn't mind stripping it entirely but then it's completely unprotected.

How good are you with masking tape?
Are you going to keep the guitar?
Another 150,000 miles, that thing will look like my F1fiddy.

If you like the sound of the guitar as it sits, I would try my hardest to talk you out of a refin. Because any refin WILL change the sound of the guitar to a degree. It could be drastic, it could be subtle. As to if for the better or for worse, that's subjective. As to if you want to roll the dice, that's on you.
But if I was shopping a nitro refin on my fine acoustic with the intent of keeping the original tone as much as possible ... I'd start by calling Martin customer service and ask them who is their recommendation within their gold-level Martin repair/service/warranty network in your geographic region. Put in a call to Carter's in Nashville too, and ask them who they use when a high-dollar Martin needs a refin.
