Keep a bag of the granular stuff on your mower. Every time you see a pile dust it real nice. I haven't had ant problems in years, have young kids in the yard. Just an easy way to stay in top of it and make sure you don't miss any by doing it while mowing.

I've found the baits (Amdro and knock-offs) work best by spreading around the edge without disturbing the mounds and then, like browning meat in a skillet, leave things be, undisturbed directly. I can see where the opposite would work too like your suggestion of disturbing the whole area by mowing. Uniformity essentially.
