***UPDATE*** Aug 8
Pensacola announced Thursday that it was awarded a third grant for $2.6 million to fully fund the new Maritime Center of Excellence that will serve as the permanent headquarters for the New York Yacht Club American Magic sailing team.
The relocation of American Magic will create 170 jobs in the advanced manufacturing, engineering and design, and high-tech research, according to city officials.
The $2.6 million grant from the Florida Seaport Transportation Economic Development program comes after the city was awarded a $3.9 million grant from Gov. Ron DeSantis' Florida Job Growth Grant and an $8.5 million award from Triumph Gulf Coast.
"This is another exciting step toward making Pensacola the sailing capital of the United States, and I can't wait to see this world-class facility come to life at the Port of Pensacola," Mayor D.C. Reeves said. "I know I speak for many Pensacolians when I say how excited I am to bring American Magic back to Pensacola permanently, putting our city on the map for sailing at a national and international level."

This is pretty cool to have locally.
Pensacola Win
The American Magic is taking to the Gulf Waters for the next few weeks in Pensacola to train for the America's Cup that's set for next summer in Barcelona, Spain.
"I have been following America's Cup for years and years and years," he said. "This is the Super Bowl of sailing."
American Magic has a shot at competing against the top five sailing teams in the world.
Gobeli says Pensacola will be the American Magic's new home when the team gets back from Spain.
"That is huge for Pensacola," he said. "We'll have the Blue Angels. We'll have American Magic."

Good that Pensacola is getting this boat and crew as a home base.
Is there more to this story that would justify your title/ caption ?
Thanks

That will be a huge and very fun event.
All the boats, teams, side events, drinking, and blue angels all at one show.
So for all of y’all that have or once had magazines on your coffee table to pretend to be cool in front of girls like, yachting, kayaking, hiking, and world traveling mags, this will definitely be an event you can actually say you have been around sail boats and yachts for once

They also had the second best tv show of the 90s.

The interest in the 1986-87 races remains one of the more remarkable sports media stories of all time. It was probably what put ESPN over the top with live sports.

In case anyone was wondering about #1

American Magic has been training in Pensacola for several years now. I don’t think it has anything to do with NY but rather great sailing conditions in Pensacola all year round.

Could probably argue that Pensacola is probably closer in climate to Barcelona as well.

Correct, but Pensacola has never been HOME. The news story reports that it will be HOME after the next race.

Are you retarded?
American Magic is the New York Yacht Club's entry in the America's Cup. Do you even know how the event works? That question was rhetorical. Based on the title of this thread, I know that you don't.

Nah, not really. Just playing off the whole "eeerbody leaving the big cities" narrative right now.

The news story may be retarded, it says Pensacola will be the teams HOME, I just made up the part of being tired of NYC based off the story.
I know its the NYYC entry. The team is in my office building every week and I've had a lot of chats with them. Cool guys and a few lady's and Im glad they are in town.

I watched the race in 1977 when it was in Newport, R.I. Ted Turner skippered the defending U.S. boat the Courageous defeating Australia. I was in a boat with some folks who actually drifted into the course. Needless to say, we were told to GTF out with haste.
Ole Ted owned that town. He'd swagger down the sidewalk with a stogie hopping from one bar to the next. Sadley, I didn't get to see the final race. Good times.
Ted was a hell of a guy until Jane got hold of him.....

If I remember the news correctly, Pensacola will be the winter home of American Magic, not the year round home. This means we have the Blues in the spring and summer, and American Magic in the winter.

Woah woah woah, I alaways thought Thunder in Paradise was filmed in St Pete, or that resort in Palm Beach

yet you leave out the key statement "Pensacola will be the American Magic's new home when the team gets back from Spain."

I don't understand what you're trying to get at. The team is leaving for Spain in May. When they return, they will stay in Pensacola, presumably to train throughout the fall and winter in preparation for the race in 2024.
