Getting the full court press from wife about adding a pup to our family. Would like to have one that can track deer, but also not shed as it would be an indoor/outdoor dog. Also friendly with kids as I have a 6 and 3 year old.

Any recommendations?

German Wirehair Pointer

ETA: I have a miniature Schnauzer that will frick up anything she comes across. Vicious little animal, but great with my kids and other dogs.

Deutsch Drahthaar (aka german wirehair) would be a great option. Do a little research on them and send me an email if your interested. Username @yahoo. I have a litter of Drahthaars that turned 2 weeks yesterday, and have a couple that are not spoken for yet.

Surely you mean they think they can frick anything up. lol

Personally I’d get a German shepherd.

They can track bomb making ordinance.

They will frick anything up. A dog crawled under my brother’s fence and his German shepherd killed it on the spot. My brother had to apologize but told him your dog crawled under my fence…. My bro also has three toddlers. The German shepherd has learned to walk away if the kids play with him too hard

Another reason why I like Germans, they’re loyal but not very emotional. They want to sit at my feet, but unlike my golden retriever they don’t feel the need to constantly lick my hand.

Last anecdotal experience: my mom died and I ended up taking in her German. I didn’t realize how abandoned that German was. That German was also smart and cunning but evil. She bit my other dogs ears twice after strategically cornering them. I had to get rid of her. You will have to train the dog right!

If you're just wanting something to track your own deer with, just about anything with a decent nose will work. If you're wanting something to use for tracking dozens of deer a week for the public, most of which will still be alive when the dog finds them, you want something with a ton of prey drive. The latter type of dog wouldn't make a very good inside dog most of the time. Labs are hard to beat for a good family dog that will also track. I have Lacy's and they make horrible pets.

ive had wirehairs and shorthairs -- wirehairs are relentless if you dont have plenty of time to train and exercise get a shorthair ( wirehairs pick up lots of stickers twigs etc in their hair) shorthairs are a little calmer

the not shedding part narrows it drastically
I’d just get a lab or a Golden and know that the benefits greatly exceed the dog hair

best tracker I ever saw was a lab

Just something to track for personal and friends. Not looking to do it for the public

My anecdotal experience with German shepherds. Two out of three will be incredible dogs. But that third one, just ain’t right. Not necessarily mean or anything, just seems like all the wires in it’s brain aren’t all connected.

I've owned JRT's in the past and they aren't real suited for an inside dog. They shed worse than any dog we've had in the past, they are very energetic, and need room to roam.

All mine worked out to be squirrel dogs and they would not bark on trail and maybe once or twice when they treed.

Meh.

I didn’t respond to the OP.

I didn’t catch all of the OP’s criteria.

I recommend a well-bred English Lab. If you insist on no shedding, you're limited to some type of poodle mix or show breed that might not pan out.

Ditch the no shedding rule and get a ridgeback.
