not to be a grammar nazi, but it's spelled Middendorf's, just in case you are looking to GPS it in the car...
It's not up for debate...get the Middendorf's Special, which is thin sliced catfish, served with fries, coleslaw and hushpuppies...
If you are looking for an appetizer, go with a soft shell crab...they usually have them, but sometimes run out...

Thanks so much!...the spelling error is probably the reason why I couldn't find their website :)

Love their crispy thin-fried. Pretty good shrimp, but they are often overcooked a bit. +1 on the softshell crab if they have them...

the Sauteed soft shell crab is awesome there.

Try the shrimp remoulade for an appetizer...its our favorite!
Then I would suggest getting either the catfish and shrimp platter or the oyster, shrimp, and catfish platter. I haven't been since the new owners took over but they haven't changed the menu (from what I hear) and I've never had anything from there I didn't like! Enjoy!

my parent's went about a week ago and they were extremely disappointed with it....we used to go a good bit on our way home from NO, but they said the food has dropped off quite a bit since the new ownership took over, which is really sad

I've been numerous times since they new owners took over and the food hasn't dropped off. In fact, they improved many of the dishes while not meddling with the classics (catfish, etc).
If anything, I'd attribute a dropoff to post-Gustav problems.

+1 (specific example, the bbq oysters) and I went shortly after they reopened after Gustav, and no issues. Still wonderful.

I completely disagree about the food dropping off. I went the weekend after they re-opened from Ike and had the best meal I've ever had there.
I usually rotate between the thin catfish and the broiled flounder.

My one complaint is that the catfish has no spice in the breading.

I went there last night. Got the seafood platter. Was really good they do give you a ton of catfish on it so you really dont have to worry about getting JUST the catfish. Meal was very good for the catfish. Everything else though I have had better elsewhere. But the catfish is what they specialize in and it is very very good. Although its sometimes so thin that you may just have breading which I thought was wierd. Great place though.

Glad to hear they're still doing well. Nice folks that own it, and have gotten battered by two storms now (Katrina/Gustav). The catfish is always great. Gumbo and Oyster Stew have been improved by the new owners also if you ask me.
It is a must stop for the NOLA north route on I-55, and worth the 20 minute detour for those going east/west on I-12.

That's one of the best things about it, in my opinion.
It's all about fresh catfish, fried to perfection.
If anyone thinks the thin's, too thin, just get the thick. It's cut like most places do it, and is really good as well.
I go back and forth between the two. As I think there's something to be said for both.

Can you order it both ways?? Thick AND thin? I really liked the thin but yea had one piece that didnt have any fish in it.

Oh, I don't know. But, they should probably let you.
I just meant that I go back and forth on different visits, though.
