I think you have to consider the potential for arm injury with pitchers. I don’t know Skenes arm history but if they feel pretty good that his mechanics will keep his arm healthy then you may have to take him before Crews.

Skenes didn't start truly pitching until college. He was a catcher/hitter first in high school and would come in to close games just throwing as hard as he could. Didn't throw a lot year round as a pitcher like most pitchers now. I think that will benefit him as he won't have the wear and tear of most pitchers his age.

LSU has a pitching coach that has had an extremely high level of success coaching at the MLB level in Wes Johnson. So you have to trust that his mechanics are well optimized.

Part of what would worry me as a scout is the velocity bump that he's shown this year going from lower-mid 90's fastball to consistently topping 100+ in just one off-season. Can his arm handle that level overtime?

If he can last this season without showing clear signs of fatigue or wear, I think a team will be highly tempted to grab him at #1.
