I don't know what Providence's situation is in terms of admin or booster support, but he has been there a while, and has only gone beyond the first weekend of the tournament once. Maybe he knows that he has taken them as far as he can.
He's also still relatively young in his early 50s, so now is a decent time to get paid and kind of reset his career, even if it looks like a lateral move now.
