In the very early stages of planning a Summer 2024 trip. Gonna have a 10-11 day block to use that will have to include travel time in June of 24. The ideas we’ve cooked up are completely different type trips but I’ve always valued yalls feedback. And if the ideas aren’t great and need some fine tuning I’m open to suggestions.

Trip 1- Thailand. - fly into Bangkok. Spend a couple days there exploring the city . Temples. Floating market. Etc
Would spend the rest of the time between Phuket and krabi with prob a day trip to one of the islands mixed in. Would love to work in chiang Mai but think that would be a little too aggressive given our time frame.

Trip 2 - multi city from either Milan or Venice. Back home from prob Zurich. Wife really wants to visit Venice for a couple days. Catch the scenic train into Switzerland and possibly rent a car and explore the alps. I would very much like to visit lauterbrunnen and grindewald area . Do some long scenic hikes and whatever else there is to do in these areas.

Kinda torn on this but slightly leaning Italy /Switzerland bc travel time cut down quite a bit. Also , we’re doing Greece and isles this summer for reference if that makes any difference .As far as international travel goes I’ve only been to London and Paris so I’m kinda just getting my feet wet with all this. Thanks in advance !

With a 10-11 day block that includes travel days I think you're definitely overambitious on trip 1. Those are very long travel days and a lot of time zone changes.

Trip 2 - I would fly into Marco Polo airport and start the trip in Venice. Do your couple of days there then get on a train to Switzerland. You're in for a 6-8 hour train ride to get into Bern, Geneva or Lucerne so there goes another full travel day. It's looks like a train to Bern then a car rental to get to the region you want to spend time in. You need to know that driving in those mountains can make a short trip take a long time. A 30 mile drive could take an hour or more depending on the route.

The tricky part to your European trip is going early enough to avoid the worst of the summer crowds in Italy, while also going late enough so that the snow has melted off the trails in the Alps that you want to hike. Early June might be too early for the latter. Snowfall levels are unpredictable, of course, but you should definitely check on when those trails are normally open and hikeable.

Thanks for the feedback. The more I think about you’re prob right on being over ambitious on trip 1. What I’m seeing is 25hours to Thailand on a good flight.
If I planned to fly home outta Zurich would it make more sense to take the Bernina Express all the way there to get the rental car. Would make for more driving but seemingly a smoother drop off of the car at the end of trip ?

Wow. I didn’t even really think of that. I could live without the hiking I guess just to be able to enjoy that scenery . Prob a stupid question but is skiing a possibility there in early/mid June ? Love to ski more than anything.

Give me number two.

I have never been to Thailand but I have taken some version of number two several times. Venice is one of our favorite cities and the Alps are spectacular.

2 - Switzerland is incredibly beautiful and the Alps are worth it.

The other thing to consider about timing is that if you plan the trip in August a ton of places will be shut down. Europeans are serious about their August holiday.

Also consider that you have the Alps (Aosta Valley) and the Dolomites in Italy which are also very beautiful. The northeast part of the Aosta Valley butts up to Mont Blanc.

Did this in 2018- flew to Zurich, stay for a couple days. Took a train to Milan and then a couple days later a train to Venice.

Then flew from Venice to Athens, flights are cheap and short.

Had a great time.

Appreciate the replies. The more I look at Switzerland the more I like. We originally were between Thailand and bali but have since ruled Bali out . Would still love to visit all those places at some point .

Never been to Thailand. But I’ve spent a week going from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen/Wengen and back and it’s the best trip I’ve ever been on ever. It’s so beautiful and clean and amazing. It’s seriously like a fairytale land.

Awesome. Did you bounce around or base somewhere. From just a little looking I did today it seems as if Interlaken would make for a good base . I’m open to bouncing around but the wife hates to switch hotels too often.

Interlaken would be a good base. It is a gorgeous place. A nice hotel there is the Victoria.

We didn't stay in Interlaken but we spent a few hours there on the way to Lucerne.

There have been threads on here about the most beautiful mountains people have been to. I say that the Jungfrau in Interlaken is the most beautiful mountain I have been to but did not see. The day we were there it was so cloudy and foggy we could barely see the mountain.

The most spectacular scenery I have ever seen in my life was in Zermatt. We took the lifts to various levels up the Klein Matterhorn. Absolutely spectacular. If you are an expert skier (I am not) or hiker, that is the place to go.

Thanks ! Not an expert skier but above average I guess. Was considering a ski trip to Zermatt next year but we may do courcheval instead if we hit Switzerland in the summer. Zermatt looks to be a pretty good drive away from the interlaken area but I def feel like I need to see Matterhorn in person.

One interesting thing about both Thailand and Bali right now is that they are full of Russians. With most of Europe closed off to Russian visitors due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, many Russians have gone to SE Asia for several reasons: avoiding the draft, loss of usual places to vacation, the poor economy in Russia, political disagreement with the war and the risk of arrest for public disagreement, etc.

I've read a number of reports that Phuket and Bali are both stuffed with Russians right now, and they probably will stay that way until the end of the war.

Matterhorn
Yes, that is an awesome sight. You can see it from Zermatt. The best vantage point is from the porch of the church.

The Klein Matterhorn is the mountain next to and overlooking the Matterhorn. It is the highest point in Europe assessable by lifts. The most spectacular scenery I have ever seen was from the terrace at the station below the top. From one side you are looking at the Matterhorn. On the other side you can see Zermatt way off in the distance. All around you are looking down at the snow covered Alps. Absolutely incredible.

You really need three weeks for SE Asia with the travel time … save it for next time and make Vietnam a part of the journey

Interesting about the Russians … I’m in Bangkok for work and haven’t felt it but I could see it being a thing on the ocean. Sort of already was in some parts.
