OK, I guess I’ll be that guy…

Love the bit about being dressed in tactical

dressed in military-style fatigues

Let’s look at the photos in the article:

Yeah, they definitely showed up in tactical gear.

(If by tactical gear you mean the same shite they wear to work every day.)

and then getting aggressive with the home owners because the nutria wasnt home

quote:

“We’re giving you ample opportunities to produce the nutria,” one of the agents said. “We feel like we’ve been entirely respectful this entire process. But we’re not going away, all right?” “Prolonging the process,” the officer said, could provoke further legal action.

If that’s your definition of an officer “getting aggressive,” I don’t know what to tell you.

The real issues that pose a threat to us are apparently white supremacy and illegal possesion of a quadruped.

We aren’t talking about LSP or NOPD here. They’re fricking game wardens.
quote:

The Lacostes said Wildlife and Fisheries agents arrived at the seafood store Thursday at about 4 p.m., but the couple's son had taken the orange-toothed rat for a ride. Dennis Lacoste said he was given a ticket for “possession of a wild quadruped without a license," and instructed to turn over the animal as soon as possible. Which he planned to do.

Did he?
quote:

At 5:30 p.m., two armed Wildlife and Fisheries officers, dressed in military-style fatigues arrived at the Lacoste home. But after 45 minutes, Neuty had not arrived.

quote:

As the sun set, the two agents told the Lacostes they were planning to leave, but that they expected to be called promptly when the couple’s son returned with the animal.

Remember that photo?

So they definitely intended to turn the nutria over, but somehow their son just happened to not come back from their “ride” for 2 and a half hours. Meanwhile the fricking Times-Picayune just happened to show up while the wildlife agents were still waiting there.

You also left out the part where the nutria was going to be relocated to the Baton Rouge Zoo:
quote:

The Wildlife and Fisheries Department said the nutria would be sent to the Baton Rouge Zoo, to be part of an educational exhibit.

quote:

Said the Baton Rouge Zoo, in a statement relayed by Wildlife and Fisheries: “The zoo has another male nutria that’s already a part of the ambassador animal program, so the two will eventually be acclimated and brought together. As social animals, the nutria should be comfortably at ease and enjoy this exposure to another animal of the same species."

I get it, it’s a family pet and it’s a shitty deal for this family. At the same time, there’s a reason for the bounty on nutria tails. It’s not like LDWF opened some extensive investigation here. These folks did a fluff piece for the Times-Picayune and WWL showing off their pet nutria, so LDWF showed up at their seafood shop.

The fact that the wildlife agents are being made out to be bullies who showed up in riot gear is a bit ridiculous, all things considered.

Sensationalism. It happens on both sides of every argument.

I blame the media.

Still a shitty thing to take a pet.

People "break the law" in hundreds of ways every day (whether by possessing weed, an expired tag, speeding, etc), sometimes under the direct obseration of law enforcement officers. Just because a law is on the books doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to be an a-hole and enforce it--especially when it's not harming anyone else.

Imagine writing all these words to rationalize cops rolling up on someone’s property and taking away their pet rat

You’ve been conditioned to accept anyone with a badge on their chest can and should be armed. This is how things like Waco happen.

Leave the weapons behind when you go to take someone’s pet. The fact this agency is empowered to walk into any place of business in the state armed should give everyone pause. If you think you might have a problem, get a local police officer involved.

A threat to human health and the environment - for fricks sake just get the rat neutered, vaccinated and let’s move on. The State’s nutria problem isn’t in people’s homes, LDWF.

It's a waste of resources, and bad PR, to confiscate the pet nutria. But you're right, the owners should have been bright enough not to agree to publicize having a wild animal for a pet. And it should have been obvious to the newspaper what the end result of their article would be.

You spent a shitload of time putting all that together but had you even read the snip from OP you would have realized how much time you wasted.

The family contacted ldfw when they found the nutria and was told it was not advisable but not illegal to keep.
