What’s the point of taking a family pet in this way
Its an invasive species that does a ton of damage to the coastal marshes and levees. Thats the whole reason for the nutria bounty program.

Not a problem when the family pet is well taken care of and safely contained, but when they escape or the owner turns them loose for whatever reason, they cause problems for the local ecosystem that may not be easily fixed. See Florida with all the invasive reptile problems due to pet owners releasing their exotic snakes when they got too big.

Maybe LDWF can inspect the home and the cage its kept in and give some sort of special permit to let them keep it. But there’s a good reason why certain animals aren’t allowed to be kept as pets. The idiots who don’t secure their animals or turn them loose when keeping the pet becomes inconvenient ruin it

There’s probably 9 billion nutria running around east Jefferson. If this one gets out, it ain’t gonna make a difference.

This is the reasoning, and it’s completely understandable that wildlife and fisheries would be concerned, but the tactical gear and the FBI ish raid was extra.

This was taken out of the wild. By being a pet it's potential destruction has been neutralized. They aren't going to release it, but if they did it would not be an additional animal to the mix since it was removed from the wild as a baby.

It's a nutria. It's not like he's releasing painted dogs of Africa into the population. Nutria's are EVERYWHERE.

In all likelihood, LDWF is going to seize the nutria, take it out back and shoot it.

I could understand this if this were the only nutria in South Louisiana but I can assure you it isn't. If this one were to be let go in the wild literally nothing different would happen.

Yes, I’m sure if this one more was turned loose it would be the tipping point resulting in an ecological disaster.

This ship has sailed

You will never get that pop under control unless you would develop a poison that only kills Nutria

The nutria bounty isn't paying enough for people to go catch them

same with alligators - eventhough not invasive their pop is out of control because their hides and meat isn't worth anyhting

Bears are already out of control in NELA and the state won't do anything about them

Same with apple snails
