Several years ago the argument was, "Why are you upset...it's ONLY fictional characters?!?" Which is a silly argument, but when people said, "wait 'til it happens to real life historical figures," the response was, "nah...that's silly."
Now we've just moved on to why that's ALSO fine and anyone suggesting otherwise is the real problem.

No, I don't. I'm sure as he wrote the story he imagined a white girl, particularly given he was a 19th century white Danish guy who would view "white" as the default. As the story is written though, Ariel's race can literally be swapped for any other race and nothing about her story requires to be changed. She can go back to being white in a future portrayal of this character or she could be asian or she could be native, etc.

My take is: Always cast characters as close to their source materials as possible. Always.
This saves the type of mental gymnastics being displayed here attempting to excuse black and brown washing characters while finding reasons for why the reverse in 2023 would be just as bad as it always was.
And if casting to source materials means less nonwhite stories, then tell more stories with nonwhite characters! This stops stunt casting of well known characters and historical figures AND it really diversifies entertainment by broadening the scope of possible stories.

Agreed. Blade's "blackness" is not essential to his character.
Interesting enough, New Line Cinema wanted the character to be white -

The problem with that is established IPs are always a safer bet for studios. It takes guts to gamble on new properties. Now I'm sure you can imagine the character makeup of most established IPs due to the historical makeup of this country.
Casting black Ariel doesn't erase white Ariel. You can show the latter to your kids if you feel compelled.

Fair enough on Blade. I'll admit in this instance I may be conflating the importance of blackness in the actual story vs the importance that Blade being black serves for Black culture in real life. That said, Blade being one of the few black superheroes is still an important part of this discussion.

I really think Disney has come to realize that these live action remakes all suck and won't make money anyway, so they've decided to use them to check diversity boxes because they'd have to write them off as losses anyway.

I'm not familiar with the show that the image is from, but would agree I don't understand why they would cast a non-white person in this role (is this a Hamilton type situation where the story isn't really about the story and casting non-white actors is making a broader point?). That said, I'm not losing sleep over it given that we have decades upon decades of movies where non-white characters were cast by white actors.

suck, yes, not make money? No, they make money, that's why they keep doing them. And why they have a half dozen in the pipe.
About the only one that probably lost money was Cruella during the pandemic(And the Mulan disaster). Even Dumbo doubled it's budget in revenue.

We did this in another thread I know. The box office is not Disney's revenue. That's total revenue from ticket sales. Disney doesn't get the whole amount and the "budget" also doesn't include marketing and advertising. I'm doubting Dumbo made money.
