It popped up on YouTube for me the other day and has apparently come a long way since launch to where it's a surging MMORPG. Anyone play it? Worth investing in?

Absolutely. I no longer have the time for it anymore but every once in a while I get an itch and pony up $10 to play for a few nights and remember how I don't have time for it anymore.

FTR, my monthly sub is $10 since I'm a legacy member (had a sub before the ARR reboot). Regular monthly is $15, but I think you can play it for free up to level 60, which is a plenty of game to determine if it's for you.

Ahh to live that expansion again.

I am also on and off. It’s worth a play for the story alone at this point.

Do I need to download all the expansion stuff to get started and get into it or can I play the base version, make sure I want to commit to it, and download the expansions later?

Download the free trial. Play game through 2nd expansion heavenwards. You will know if you want to continue after that.

Do what others mentioned. Just try the free trial. I still play it pretty regularly. It's a lot of fun, and I do recommend it to anyone who wants to try a story driven MMO.

I'm giving thought to tinkering with it again. Want to main a tank since it's easier to find activities that way in DF (unless it's gotten easier for DPS). I keep reading that Dark Knight is the most preferred tank class?

I just don’t have the time for MMOs anymore even though I’m likely the biggest FF I know. I do find it hilarious that it crushed wow into obscurity and all the neckbeards there (of which I once languished among) had to migrate over to what, from what I can gather, I’d an mmo experiment designed to take as much mmo away as possible and make it a single player narrative game

A ton of people love it.

However, being a person who loves the play style of Lost Ark, I didn't care for FF14.

But I'm also not a huge fan of the WASD and tabular type of MMO's (which a lot of them are).

ETA: I think this also stems from my 10 years of playing League of Legends and liking/being familiar with the gameplay mechanics.

Dark Knight is the current meta tank. Great at everything. Gunbreaker is also a lot of fun. Paladin got a lot of changes in Endwalker too.

Player count is so much higher now a days, so much so that no job waits too long in Duty Finder. Tank and healer are both <1 minute queue usually. DPS in the 5-10 minute range (<1 minute if doing Alliance Raid roulette).

If you get on, message me in-game or on Steam/Discord. I'll hop on and run a few with you.

Sure will. I checked Esper the other night and not too many people were on.

What DPS classes do players stay away from, then? I mained Bard and Ninja when I was playing a lot, still want to re visit my roots and level up Dragoon as well.

ETA Also, I leveled bard and ninja to 60 back around Heavensward and I know they revamped all the combat systems a few times since then. What's the best way to get up to speed on how to play those?

We're in a pretty casual period at the moment. The hardcore players have cleared the raid tier, and some others are catching up on new content. I getting on most nights, but usually later in the evening.

Only class that most avoid is Astrologian. For DPS class, Bard, Monk, and Black Mage are probably bottom 3 most played. Of the new jobs, Reaper is must play imo. A lot of fun.

Check the job guide, reaquaint with the skills.

Then spend some time on the training dummy (or just look at the rotation on The Balance).

Tricky part about some of those rotation tutorials is they are for the current level cap, so it will involve a good bit I don't have unlocked yet. Guess they are good starting points at least.
