La Tech was up 5-4 in the 6th, Ole Miss won 4-3

OXFORD — Maybe the scoreboard does lie.
Ole Miss baseball and Louisiana Tech jogged off Swayze Field on Wednesday afternoon with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when lightning was detected in the area. The Bulldogs had just scored two runs to turn a 4-3 Ole Miss advantage after six innings into a 5-4 Louisiana Tech lead.
They couldn't know it at the time, but it was moot. When it was announced more than two hours later the game could not be resumed, Ole Miss was declared the winner. NCAA rules roll the score back to the last completed inning in these circumstances. The Rebels led 4-3 after six innings.

Here's the relevant section from the NCAA rule book:
"It shall be a regulation game if called by the umpire at any time after five innings have been completed, and the score shall be that of the last equal inning played ..."
There are various exceptions to the rule, but none of them apply in this scenario.

Ole Miss is taking quite the PR beating today and it is hysterical.
Chicken shite cowards.

Might be a W in the win column, but response to everything that transpired in the College Baseball world outside of Oxford it's ultimately an L for Ole Miss. Have already seen it reported LTU's coach reached out earlier this week and even Tuesday to push the game up both so they got it in, and so LTU didn't have to travel through the worst of it. Also reported LTU offered to suspend the game and conclude it whenever it worked for Ole Miss and Bianco said his AD told him not to. Also was a bit of gamesmanship to leave the tarp off the infield so that when the next delay came the decision was made the field would not survive another hr plus delay and rain.
Not a good look at all for the defending champs.

From what I saw it was a lightening delay and not a rain delay at first so that is why the tarp wasn't put out. Then the rain came after 2 hours of lightening delays and it rained all night. It wouldn't have mattered if the tarp was on the field or not, they wouldn't have finished the game.
Now the rule might should be changed to no contest, but the game last night was called based on the rule. Would it have been fair that Tech won with more at bats than Ole Miss?
I would imagine Ole Miss won't sked La Tech any more after Lane's calling them out.

How does Ole Miss look bad here? Did they supposedly influence the umps to call the game?
The rule makes perfect sense.

Not tarping the field and then when asked if they could complete the game at a later date, they said no.

They made zero effort to beat the weather or even tarp the field. They refused any effort to resume the game at a later date.

I have no issue with the rule, or the umpires. And I haven’t seen any coach/admin from La Tech complaining about them either.

Damnnnn... between that and reportedly running out of Ruston because of 'Covid' while no one on the team missed the weekend series two days later in 2021, it sounds like Bianco is Floridian for biatch.

I know it could be a logistical nightmare, but I think the rule should either be completed at a later date or voided altogether if that can't happen.
But as I think more about it, last night was a pretty rare occurrence where the team that was winning when the delay happened ended up losing. Let's say Ole Miss was up 12-1 when the delay happened in the 7th inning, it'd be pretty fricked up if that result was voided. Maybe a rule in place that if it's a case like last night, there has to be a way to finish the game at a later date.

I do have a question. If LTU was up 4-3 going into the 7th, and Ole Miss scored two in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead, but the inning was still ongoing. Would Ole Miss get the win, or would it revert back to the score at the end of 6? If that were the case is there more than 0% chance that Ole Miss would accept the L?

Who doesn't tarp a field during a lightning delay though? It's not like it's some crazy notion that rain may accompany lightning.

With rain on the way, you would think they would tarp it anyway. I mean they covered the pitcher's mound and home plate area.

In the offseason, they should be able to add an addendum to the rule that the game results in a no-contest if the trailing team ties or takes the lead in the top half of the inning. But they'll probably focus more on trying to shave another 5 minutes of total game time while not addressing the long commercial breaks.
To AwesomeSauce's hypothetical, would they consider the fact that Ole Miss was able to bat in the bottom half and take a lead to qualify as a "last equal inning played"?

Yeah, looking at the verbiage it does say equal and not completed as I saw it misquoted last night. I guess I should have read the actual book instead of going off yahoos on the internet's summarized version.

MLB uses the same rule for regular season games.

MLB also puts a lot more effort in finishing games.

This isn’t the first time they’ve skated Tech. In 2021, they were set to play two midweek games. Tech beat the piss out of Ole Miss 13-1. Ole Miss used the Covid excuse and went home. Two days later, they had their SEC opener against Auburn on Friday which they won 1-0.
I wasn’t really mad at them calling it. It is a joke how Ole Miss is acting on social media, and they’ve being called out on it.

MLB doesn't have the same travel concerns that NCAA has, plus they probably would have tarped the field.
Still, the rule is the same, if a game is called after 5 innings have been completed, the score goes back to the last completed inning.
