Italy and France in June/July

Greetings board of wonderful people. I need some advice if you have time.
My wife and SIL is looking to fly into Italy (maybe Rome?) somewhere from June 10th-13th. They would like to explore the area and maybe Florence and head over that Friday to Port Venere/La Spezia for a wedding and reception on that Saturday. After that, they are thinking about maybe a day in Venice and then eventually getting into France where they want to see Nice, Bordeaux, about 7-10ish days in the Rennes/Bretagne area (ancestor/family research there) and then 2-3 days around Paris before heading back to America. SIL is coming from Tri-city Pasco area of Washington and my wife is coming from MSY.
My questions are mainly on transportation. My wife and I have never been to Europe area. Do you try to book planes, trains, car rentals, etc in advance, or mainly just the flights and book the rest on the as needed basis? They don't have an official timeline except needing to be back home by like July 15th or something so I'm just doing a one way ticket there for now, since they don't have a definite day they are coming home.
I debate if its best to fly my wife to JFK or somewhere and meet her sister for the overseas trip, or just have them meet in Rome. Coming from MSY, she could hit up Atlanta instead of JFK. SIL has options of a few different routes as well. The only thing they both agree on is not going the budget airlines overseas, because they dont trust or know enough about them. They did have cheaper flights for Tap Portugal or WestJet among a few others for them.
Any advice you might have for a trip this size or smaller cities worth looking into over the bigger ones?
Sorry for the length.

How many total days, not including flights and so on?
That's a lot to do if it's less than 2 weeks, imo.
But Rome, you only need 2 full days imo, 3 days max. It is a total and complete shitshow, but if you are prepared for that its fine.
Florence is WONDERFUL. One of my favorite cities anywhere. Beautiful, wonderful museums, wonderful food. Much more relaxed as there are virtually no cars in the tourist area.
You can easily get to La Spezia by train from Florence. I have not stayed in La Spezia, but we did spend several nights in Cinque Terre (Vernazza) which is very nearby and one of the most beautiful places anywhere. Just a few minutes by train from Cinque to Spezia.
I would definitely fly from Florence to Paris. Train is probably extremely long and just wasting too much time.
I'd want at least 3 days in Paris, if not more (personally I'd want 5 if you've never been). Paris is up there with Florence as one of my faves.
You can get around France fairly easily by train but for much of the countryside renting a car is probably essential.

They have roughly 1 month to play around with. They have to be home by 7/10 and can leave anywhere from 6/10-6/14. The wedding is Saturday 6/17 at Chiesa di San Pietro in Porto Venere, which looks absolutely amazing in itself.

Well hot damn.
I would use trains for the most part in country between cities, rent a car if going more rural, and plane between countries.
Using Google Maps to get an idea of distances is always good.
Do research and prioritize the must do's.
And as I always say: If you can simplify the trip, simplify. More time in a place to take it in is never a bad thing imo.

We flew between cities in Italy because I didn’t want to spend as much time on the train. Used Jet US or something like that and it was $40-$50 per person. Used a car service to get to and from the airport.

The train system works great and there are fast trains on certain routes.
The thing I question on your itinerary is Venice for one day. 1) I don't think that is enough and 2) it is not close to France at all. You're going way east for one day then only to travel way west which will be one LONG travel day.

Yeah, 1 day in Venice will probably just make one hate VEnice.
Its a pretty unique place that you get lost in easily and during the day it is a crushing shitshow of tourists. At night it is lovely though.

So what you are suggesting is doing a few days in that area if they really want to go that route or by passing it and heading into France without going all the way east like that?

My favorite way to travel between cities in Europe is by train. They are usually fast, easy and on schedule.
I also find it surprisingly easy to deal with rental cars.
You will not want a rental car in Florence but you will want one to explore the Tuscan countryside. From there you can drive to La Spezia (we did). Or you can train.
While you are in LaSpezia make sure you spend a couple of days in the Cinque Terre. If you don’t want to change hotels you can stay in LaSpezia and easily take the train to the five villages although LaSpezia itself is not that charming. Its main attraction is its proximity to the Cinque Terre. I would recommend spending a couple of days in one of the towns, Vernazza being my favorite and Monterosso al Mare being the biggest.
This will be a wonderful trip.

With travel I'd suggest three nights in Venice which will give them enough time to explore and enjoy the city. It really is a nice city.
They also won't arrive one day, spend a night and then have to immediately pack and leave the next day. With the numbers of days you have alloted for the trip it just doesn't make sense to blow through a great city like that. Near Venice there are two islands that make fantastic blown glass and visiting one of those alone can eat up an entire day.

I suggest also staying IN Venice. Some people stay on the mainland or the other islands and its just not the same.
Burano is really pretty.

I was going to suggest flying into Bologna, which is what I did and it was a breeze, but I just looked it up and the US carriers have stopped flying there direct. I think AA and UL both had flights there pre-covid.
To be honest, I would fly into Venice, stay there 2-3 days then train down to Florence for 3 days then train over to La Spieza.
That assumes you leave on the 10th. If you leave closer to the wedding date, fly into Milan and then head straight down to La Spezia, relax, enjoy Cinque Terra for several days and then after the wedding head out and explore Italy with plans to fly somewhere in France from Venice, Rome, etc. depending on which direction you go.
You can get around anywhere in Europe using trains, and the high speed trains like TGV get you there pretty quick and easy. Just know that many of the trains (including all of the high speed and nicer lines) require an advanced reservation and seat assignment. They can book up and fares are generally priced like airlines - the earlier you book the cheaper the ticket and last minute fares are more expensive. Smaller regional trains are generally cheaper, slower and you can walk up and buy a set fare ticket from a kiosk minutes before boarding. Just plan in advance and know what type of train you will take. Rome2Rio is a great wedbsite that will list all transportation options between cities in Europe. They are also bus lines that are much nicer and more convenient than our Greyhound and sometimes that is a good option. The budget airlines are fine and sometimes this is the best option to get from A-B. For example easyjet has a flight from Rome to Nantes, France (you mentioned spending a week in this region) and that would save you a lot of long train rides, or avoid the hassle of having to connect through CDG. Then again there may be things you want to explore in between.

Venice in June/July sounds like a terrible tourist filled fiasco. Personally, I would avoid. They could fly into Rome which will also be crazy busy and hot. Acclimate in Rome for a couple of days and then take the train to La Spezia. No need for a car at this point. The train is much easier than flying. Typically arrive 15 minutes before departure and board. Trains almost always depart/arrive in City Center which is super easy. After the wedding, I would head North to Piemonte via train. Beautiful area, not quite as crowded, cooler weather, etc. They could spend a couple of nights each in Turin, Como, Milan in any order. At that point, I would consider a car to explore France but it can easily be done by train as well. If they are comfortable driving, I would choose the car and turn it in as soon as they arrive in Paris.

Rome2Rio.com It's got a mobile app as well. It'll get you anywhere, including trains, car rental, flights, ferries, the lot. It tells you how long trips take, gives you train numbers, etc. It also gives you train station names in the local language, which speeds up figuring out which direction of the train you need to get on, etc. I've used it in Europe and Asia extensively.
Given the flexibility in your itinerary, I don't know that I'd book anything except your flights in and out of Europe. That's the way I do it. I learned early on, even when I was single, that you find stuff you never expected, and may want to hang around. Or you figure out that Rome isn't as interesting as you thought it was, and you want to duck out a day early, for example.
I think others gave given pretty good reviews of TAP. I always prefer a short hop connection inside Europe, than a connection through DC, NYC, etc. and the flight from Lisbon to Italy should give you some great views. I don't know what the flight path would be the day of travel, but "as the crow flies" you may get some spectacular views of the coast out the left side of the aircraft.

I told my wife to go ahead and download rome2rio and get familiar with it. Thanks for the advice everyone!

This advice has them skipping Florence which I don't agree with at all.
I'd spend time in Florence over Rome 1000 times out of 1000

Agreed. Spending all that time there and not spending time in Florence makes zero sense.

I get people NEEDING to see the Coliseum and Vatican and so on...
but Rome is at times not that enjoyable. It is extremely chaotic, hot, unorganized, and bee hive.
I need to go to Rome one day and NOT do the tourist stuff and just be able to try and enjoy it.
But Florence is extremely enjoyable. Beautiful city, more relaxed pace, no cars, great museums, great food.

Florence is on my bucket list. I'm very jealous I won't be tagging along.

Chinese will be back this summer in full force. Venice/Rome/Pisa will be steaming hot messes.
