It's such a crazy time, a guard was called the dirtiest player for mostly alleged cheap shots against defensive guys (like Merlin Olsen) who openly tried to end careers

Defensive linemen back in the late 60s and 70s were almost a protected class who couldn't do wrong and they were media darlings.


Look how many of them were either either became faces of the game or got huge media/Hollywood jobs.

Merlin Olson, Joe Green, Deacon Jones, Bubba Smith, Alex Karras, etc, etc.

I think they were considered far more "freaks of nature" to be that big and that athletic back then as opposed to now, and the media ate them up.
