I don't think that anyone should feel obligated to stand and be silent while it plays, if that is what you mean.

As to the broader question, it is a church hymn written about 120 years ago, and it was adopted as an "anthem" of the fight for equal rights about 100 years ago. Since I DO agree that Blacks DID face significant oppression at the time, I respect the work that was done under the auspices of the song.
