I went trout fishing today, I live in upstate SC. Drove an hour to a river called the Estatoee. I used a fly rod and a reg rod. I saw about 4 and one got off.. does anybody have any tips? I know I’m a little early in the season I heard?.. it was fun anyway

When you say trout fishing around these parts, the only thing we know is speckled trout in brackish water. No one around here knows anything about what you are talking about unless they are a fan of a team up north or west somewhere. That I can promise you.

Plenty of posters here fish for fresh water trout.
1st question is what flies and sizes were you using?
What size tippet?

False. I love fly fishing for those fancy trout. I'm not very good at it, but have managed to catch in several states in the last few years. OP, there's no one size fits all for trout - location, hatches, conditions, timing, etc.
That said, I did expect this post to be about speckled trout before opening.

I go fishing when I can if the weather is agreeable...
heck with being "too early"...
sounds like you enjoyed it and got back in one piece...
that's a win...

I was using a yellow stimulator fly. The tippet I’m not sure it came already on the combo I bought from Cabelas

Wasn't it pouring down rain all day in Upstate SC?

Do trout stop feeding?

I’d agree you’re too early, but the beauty of fly fishing is the casting is as enjoyable as the catching. That’s not to say that you can’t catch fish this time of year, but it’s difficult.
5wt with a pheasant tail would be my recommendation from not too far from upstate SC here in WNC.

Do you fly fish upstream or down stream
Upstream the fly and line drift back towards you causing slack and tangles
Downstream your feet stir up mud and debris scaring the fish

State of Louisiana stocks Brown Trout at Veterans Park in Mayberry (Ragley) and several other ponds in Louisiana...

It’s not too early.
Watch YouTube’s, take lessons, join a local club. A day with a guide could teach you a tremendous amount. Go to a local fly shop, tell them where you plan to fish and ask what they’re biting.
