I’m sorry, but I feel this board is in denial here
The Lakers killed it at the deadline. Yes they have a hole to climb out of but we saw with the Pels last year that’s not the impossible task some might want to think.
Their biggest needs were getting more shooting and depth all around and they achieved all of that.
Beasley, Vanderbilt, and Bamba are three guys that could all immediately steal minutes on our team and will make the Lakers a lot deeper and versatile. Russell and Beasley give them two microwave shooters that can hit open threes, which they lacked, and go off on any given night.
I would not want to see a healthy Lakers team in the playoffs.
Long term they did exactly what they claimed they wouldn’t, which is sacrifice the future for the immediate. But if AD and Lebron can go into the playoffs at 80% or better health wise(which of course is the sticking point in all this), I’d give them as good a chance as anyone coming out the west at this point.

They have much more depth than before and theoretically can fix things, but it depends on the team hitting it on all cylinders and certain teams above them flaming out.
Utah is clearly going to flame out. SAS and Houston aren’t going anywhere.
Big questions are what happens with Portland, Golden State, and OKC, which are the three main teams above them in the play-in territory.

Lakers’ upcoming schedule-
Warriors
Blazers
Pelicans
Warriors
Mavericks
Grizzlies
Thunder
Wolves
Warriors
Grizzlies
Raptors
Knicks
Pelicans
Rockets
Mavs
Magic
Suns
Thunder
Bulls
Bulls
Wolves
Rockets
Jazz
Clippers
Suns

There are some clear shite teams in there (Jazz, Rockets, Bulls, etc) but they have the Suns multiple times and a lot of games against teams like OKC who they need to pass in the standings.

Unfortunately you are very right here.
The Lakers absolutely killed it. I hate it.
Their biggest problems were all addressed, and they have Lebron James and Anthony Davis, both healthy for now. Lebron in particular looks completely energized.
I am very worried about them

They are getting the Warriors 3 times without Steph...

The guys they got are game changing for them
D'Angelo Russell, who everyone shits on his entire career?
Vanderbilt/Beasley...nice players, they're changing the game in the playoffs?
quote:You should be asking if they can even make the play in, because even that isn't likely.
I'd argue that a starting lineup consisting of LBJ and AD with any competent players around them can hang with anybody.
quote:So 2 for sure mediocre players and 1 guy is playing mediocre this year.
Now in the second unit they have guys like Rui, Schrods, Beasley, etc who can at the very minimum hold their own.
They got better pieces for cheap, no question. They did not get guys that are needle movers, also no question about that.

LeBron is going to fade down the stretch. He has been playing heavy minutes in losses and he passed Kareem in points, so the question is how much does he want to grind to maybe make a playin game? We saw this last year after they went all in to beat us and lost, he just shut it down.

If Vanderbilt/Beasley/Dlo/Bamba can make a team go from 25-31 to some legit threat in the West, why did they all get to the Lakers for 1 protected 1st and a couple of 2nds?
They got better for the regular season, sure. They're still less than 50% chance to make the playoffs, and they have zero chance to win a title, they are not a "true contender" as KoC says.

Vanderbilt is someone that would have been perfect for this team cause he has Draymond like qualities in that he can switch 1-5, kill it on the defensive and offensive glass, sneaky solid passer, and make up for bigs that may lack typical defensive capabilities. He is why Minny worked so well with Kat last season cause Vanderbilt could make up for all of Kat’s shortcomings.
You can go small with AD on the bench with Walker/Lebron/Vanderbilt + shooters, or you can have stifling defense with both him and AD. Use Vanderbilt to cover KD or Kawhi in a 7 game series. Will probably be who they typically put on Zion with AD helping. Which is the sort of combo that has given Zion trouble
They went from a dinosaur roster lacking all the trappings you need in the modern NBA to checking off every box and then some.
Just like every other team it will come down to the two best players, but the Lakers now have a supporting cast that fits and can pose its own challenges and identities.

Yes.
The guys they got are actual fits for the structure of their team.
The whole reason the entire league was shitting on them and laughing at them at the beginning of the year was because we all knew what a total frick up it was to get westbrook on that team. It was just a terrible fit.

I guess you and I really perceive the value of role players differently. I think all role players are needle movers. If the only way you could move the needle at the trade deadline was by acquiring KD or Kyrie, then why even make moves?
Here's what I know:
Jared Vanderbilt is a damn good basketball player.
Beasley and Deangelo, though not stars, can each drop 20 on any given night. Rui is a physical tweener.
Deangelo >> Westbrook
Beasley >> Pat Bev
Vandy ~ TBryant
Bamba >>> Wenyan Gabriel
Rui >> Troy Brown

That's it, that's all they've done.

You act like the NBA is this perfectly tuned decision-making organism and the value placed on guys in the market accurately reflects their court value?
We must not watch the same NBA. One where a team gave up 5 firsts for Gobert and Orlando got Bol Bol for cash considerations and a throwaway second rounder. Clippers got Norman Powell for a second rounder, a guy averaging 16-3 on 42% from three for the Clips.
Pels got CJ for a pittance and he was a more positive impact than most bigger trades in the last year.
Lakers did incredibly well for themselves. Nabbing guys that frankly, at least in Beasley and more specifically Vanderbilt, the Pels should have made a strong push for

Beasley this season has been mediocre. Rui is a below average basketball player. Bamba is a below average basketball player.

Lakers did incredibly well for themselves.
What is the legit % chance they make the playoffs? It's wayyyyyyy below 50%.
quote:I agree, but the equivalent of thinking the Lakers go fro 25-31 to a threat in the West would be thinking the Pels go from .500 to the West favorites, which I don't think we would have been if we had gotten Vanderbilt+Beasley. We would have just been a better squad with a bit better chances, which would have been great. But it would not have drastically shifted our expectations, like we seem to be doing with the Lakers.

The lakers when from a D+ team to a C/C- team and there’s people on this board thinking the Lakers are a finals contender my lawd.

I don't think anyone is arguing they got better for super cheap. But that's entirely different than saying these guys have turned a 25-31 team into a "true contender" that is now a legit threat in the West.

They are literally hyping this squad more than lakers twitter and r/lakers.

Lakers have a hole to climb out of, no one has said differently. But they now have the roster to do it, and if they can, they will be as tough an out if healthy as anyone in the West. That roster can matchup and give problems to any team in the West if they are healthy.
We can revisit these conversations in the coming weeks and see how things fair. The hole is deep, and maybe too deep if AD/Lebron get banged up for any significant time, but I would not want to see this team in the playoffs healthy. They had a great deadline and added every type of player they needed to absent a third star.

hey will be as tough an out if healthy as anyone in the West.
I'll never be convinced that the 3rd worst team in the West then becomes the toughest team to beat in a playoff series by adding DLo/Vanderbilt/Beasley/Bamba. The only way I'll ever believe that is to see it happen, and the odds of that are super slim.
