Ants in Potted Blackberries.

I have a couple of those whisky barrels cut in half to use as planters in my yard. Planted some Prime Ark Freedom blackberries that are growing up onto an aluminum fence as planned. Problem is fire ants have made their home in the planters over the last year or so. Is there any way to get rid of them without using ant killer or removing the soil and starting over?

Use the white dust (acephate). It won't harm the fruit.

Why do you not want to use ant killer?

Wasn’t sure if the ant killer would harm the plants. I was also trying not to use pesticides in such a confined area on plants my youngsters eat. I’m probably overthinking it though. Thank you for the acephate recommendation.

Diatomaceous Earth will keep them out and kill any that cross it. It won't kill a colony because the ants need to walk through it for it to work.

Acephate is no longer recommended for fruit and vegetable gardening,it’s a systemic insecticide taken up by plant roots.Works great for fire ants in lawn.
Raised beds I use Spinosad,it’s natural bacteria approved for organic gardening.
I order it from Amazon-Monterey Garden Insect Spray.Mix 2 ounces /gal.water and pour on mound, works great.
Fire ants are a pain with container gardening/raised beds.

Try stirring them up every day even multiple times per day. This can make them abandon their home.

Sorry for that. I didn't know it was systemic. Learned something new today.

Bifenthrin. Bifenthrin kills terminates, ants, and a whole bunch more. I always spray my yard and garden. I used to have issues with ants on my okra and figs. Not anymore.
