Depends upon how you define "home" and which version of the origin story you accept, but (generally) they did return to modern Israel from Egypt, yes.

But the death of Herod and their subsequent return to the area has not bearing upon their status as political refugees at the time that they left.

No, I do not think that most of the folks trying to enter the US at this time are political refugees. I have NEVER argued otherwise.

Again, I just find it entertaining that so many "Christians" know the Bible so ... poorly.

and.. I'm pretty sure the reason was to pay taxes. strike two against illegal refugee argument.
