The author of the article in the link says that he is waiting for a response from Southwest Airlines. They cannot legally comment on employee deaths without violating HIPAA laws, which cover dead employees medical information, as well.

100% false. With no identifying information they can tell you how many pilots they employ and how many passed away in 2022....There is not a single bit of HIPPA violation in those 2 data points.
Using your version of HIPPA, no data on deaths in any demographic would be allowed to be shared.
If an SWA plane went down could they legally tell you how many on board, and how many died? Would that be a HIPPA violation?

HIPAA laws only apply to medical providers and insurance providers.
