"Rickey got a big ranch. Rickey got a big bull. Rickey got horses. Rickey got chickens and everything. And Rickey got a 20 gallon hat"

Especially his career stolen base record. Dude has 50% more career stolen bases than the 2nd place player on that list, Lou Brock.
To put it in perspective, Brock stole 938 bases in his career. If a player played 20 seasons, he would have to average 47 stolen bases a year to beat Brock’s career number. Last season, Jon Berti led the majors in stolen bases…with 41.
It would take Berti 23 years just to match Brock’s career number if he averaged his major league leading 41 bases a year and over 34 years to beat Rickey’s mark

Rickey played most of his years just before my time, but I do recall watching him in a few games.
Great thread - love the comparison of the numbers. Staggering.

Can you imagine the kids of today watching a 1980's Cardinals game and seeing Willie McGee and Vince Coleman beat the shite out of the ball straight down into the Astro-turf so it bounced a mile in the air, making it impossible for anyone to get them out at first? And then proceeding to steal second and maybe even third.
1983, low A Sally league. Coleman played for Macon Redbirds and came to town. He was running all over the place. He had 145 SB in 113 games that year (looked it up)

Those 80’s cards teams were fun to watch… they didn’t homer to you to death but played text book fundamental baseball… good times.

Nobody has hit more home runs to lead off a game than Henderson, who opened a contest with a homer 81 times.

In 1996, Rickey was a new addition to the Padres roster.
As he boarded the team bus and looked for a seat, Steve Finley told him, “You have tenure, sit wherever you want.”
Rickey looked at Finley and replied, “Ten years? Rickey’s been playing at least 16, 17 years.”

The best part of the day Rickey set the all time steals record is that a few hours later Nolan Ryan threw his 7th no hitter and stole all of Rickey’s spotlight.

I remember that. And both those records will ever be broken. Face it… Ricky is the greatest lead off man in the history.

In 1985, Henderson of course led the American League in steals, but for the first time in his career, he led the entire major leagues in WAR (9.9 bWAR, 9.7 fWAR).
Rickey failed to receive a single first place vote for the AL Most Valuable Player award.
Instead, first baseman and fellow Yankee Don Mattingly won the award handily with 23 of 28 possible first place votes.
In fact, Henderson alone accounted for more than a third of the baserunners Mattingly cashed in, when RBIs were considered the gold standard for MVP.

I mean we’re in an era where MLB players can’t hit the ball to one side of the field to beat a shift
To be fair we’re also in an era when every team has multiple guys that throw it 98+ mph. There used to be a handful of guys on the planet that threw that hard

6 year old me and the dozen or so kids lining the dugout got snubbed for an autograph by Rickey when he was taking batting practice with the As when they were playing the rangers. I hated Rickey irrationally for a long time after that
Will Clark did the same in the Astrodome circa 1989. I’ve still not forgiven him.
