If you hadn’t read or heard about his drug-free lifestyle, I think most would assume Frank Zappa would be stoned out of his mind or on acid most of the time. The dude did not even partake in ganja.

Watch out where the huskies go and don’t you eat that yellow snow.

Sort of. I was looking up the best guitarist of all time and then remembered that Zappa was drug-free.

FWIW, he was initially denied even consideration for the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame because his music was deemed to juvenile and easy to play. He was later posthumously inducted

First musician I thought of when I read the thread title. I think he had the same expectations of his band, too.

No.

From an interview with high Times

Well, yeah ... when I first started smoking pot, it was probably mostly Mexican pot, and occasionally you'd get something from South America. Very, very rarely would you get Thai Stick or Cambodian or something from that part of the world.

Yep. He was true to his values and would fire them pretty quickly

Supposedly he kicked Lowell George out of his band because of drug use. There are other versions too. In any case Lowell George shared Zappa's extremely high musical standards and found some great players when he put together Little Feat.

Another that actually doesn't surprise me though he and his band had the look - Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull.

"People would say, 'Ian Anderson, he must be on something,'" Anderson says. "But I never tried drugs. It always seemed too scary. I knew too many people who died from them.... And I always hated the smell of marijuana. It used to be wafting from the audience - the stage (covered) in a big cloud.

"Being a singer and a flute player, I certainly didn't want that."
