I believe the LHSAA allows a HS coach to have 2 of their players on a non-school team. It's been a long time since I've had to know the rule but I used to coach HS and travel ball. Used that rule frequently.
During the school year? This isn't over the summer.

I coached volleyball. Once our season ended in the Fall, we would run club teams. I had 2 of my school's players on my club teams for a few of those years.
But this was in 2001. I'm sure the rules have likely changed

I can see that. The issue now is coaches want to coach their players year round in a fall league. Then they push kids to not play other sports because they NEED to play on the school team in the fall. Leads to a bunch of dumb shite. I imagine that is where this rule came from.

Bureaucracy - the ultimate weapon of mass destruction against common sense.

That is a little bit ridiculous
On appeal they should have overturned this
At least the coach is doing what's best for the player and sitting it out so the player is not losing his year
Even the college coaches in Alabama indicate how ridiculous this is

If that is the only problem with the AHSAA, you should see the continual dumpsterfire that the LHSAA has become.

This is stupid, but here is the thing.
HS coaches will lie, cheat, steal, and use every excuse they can think of to try to get an advantage. So, we get rules like this.
Not sure how the Alabama association is structured, but in Louisiana, the ultimate power lies with the principals. The same principals that run the schools. The same principals who love them some "zero tolerance" rules.
They don't make exceptions. The appeal process isn't for exceptions, it's for when a rule has been misapplied. It seems like the rule here has been correctly applied, it's just a stupid rule.

This is an issue for sure, but that's not what's happening in this situation.

From everything I can find about this incident, he thought he did clear it with them.
I guess his major mistake is not getting that in writing.

Probably, but I do see the point about his being a pitching coach and the kid didn't pitch. It's semantics, similar to asking- Did Jason Kelly coach Dylan Crews last year?

quote:That's what his side said, but...
They communicated with the AHSAA every step of the way and the coach was led to believe he would have to pay a fine, not sit out the entire year
quote:
AHSAA associate executive director Kim Vickers presented an email exchange from Feb. 2022 with Urban that outlined specifically what a violation of the rule would mean in regards to either Moseley or the player having to sit out the season.

I loved having my kids go play for someone else once our season was done. Sometimes people can teach the same thing but in a different style and it will stick.
It was never about me, it was about the kids growing in the game and enjoying their HS years. My team always had multisport athletes.
I used to love having track sprinters and tennis players tryout. Their footwork and explosiveness was fun to watch
For top programs, kids have to play club/travel ball. You fall behind other programs if there aren't enough club players on your roster. But that doesn't mean they cannot go play other sports as well.

Unfortunately, it isn't. They consistently make national news for following their rules down to the letter even in cases where exceptions clearly should be made.

This rule also applies in Georgia. As a soccer official in both club and HS, I see this all the time.
In our HS region, we've had coaches at multiple schools try to get this rule enforced on a club team manager who is a community coach at the HS. No dice.
I have a club coach this year who has given up his club team so he can coach the girls HS team which has several of his club players on it.
