Background:

- 40s

- no pre-existing conditions

- only time 2 times I've been to the doctor in the last 15 years were the 2 times that I thought something was wrong with my pecker

...I definitely don't think I'm bulletproof and realize that I'm getting older, but 400 dollars per month for some half-arse plan with a 7,000 deductible seems questionable. What are the pros and cons? What would you do?

I really do appreciate any serious answers!

It's high no matter how you slice it unless you work for the government in some capacity.

As long as you are willing to file for bankruptcy if a medical issue strikes and you don’t have insurance then you will be fine. That’s a risk I am unwilling to take.

are you employed and is your plan through your employer? Many companies offer multiple options/tiers, but your options will be limited to what your employer offers. With your age and low healthcare utilization costs, I'd choose a high deductible plan that is HSA eligible and max out the HSA for the tax benefits.

Not having insurance is not worth the risk, especially in your 40's. I considered myself very healthy going into my late 40's. I only went to the doctor maybe a handful of times my entire life (broken bone, colonoscopy at 40, etc.).

About 1 & 1/2 years ago, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with cancer. Without insurance, my medical bills would be around 1 million dollars (not kidding).

You don't buy insurance because you need it, you buy insurance IN CASE YOU NEED IT.

I would definitely be looking at a health cost sharing program.

If you continue to be healthy, enroll in highest deductible plan, max out HSA each year.

Sounds like you are already in the high deductible plan.

Not really. There are several out there and they can be purely public or limited to members of religious institutions. You just have to look around and figure out what might be available to you.

They dont work for everyone but my sister was on one for years via her church because her job didn't have health insurance. It seemed to work fine for her.

They meet the requirements of having health insurance but I dont know if they meet the requirements to have an HSA.

These health cost sharing programs are NOT insurance, therefore not regulated in the same way and do not quality for HSA (since again, they are not insurance). Good luck getting any of these plans to shell out $100k+ in the event of disaster. Might as well be uninsured.

Unfortunately, that honestly sounds like a decent cost right now.

Doesn't sound like a bad price to me.

I am in my early 60s and family of 3 still insured with $5600 deductible, max out of pocket like $16K cost me $23000 a year. I don't think they even consider preexisting conditions anymore but we have none.

Here are the four main ones:

Medishare

Christian Healthcare Ministries

Samaritan Healthcare

Liberty Healthshare

If you have CHM, you present as self pay and they reimburse you, so you'll want some amount of reserves or a credit line.

Medishare pays the provider like an insurance company would, unless something changed in the past few years. I've processed checks from them.

No direct knowledge of the other two.

As opposed to getting a surprise bill for tens of thousands of dollars because an out of network doctor walked through the room while you were under.

Or getting prior auth and then they don't pay (funny how they always give a disclaimer that authorization is not a guarantee of payment).

Or needing a specialist and none are in network.

I thought with those cost share plans your getting group insurance so it’s a better rate than you can get as an individual. I could be wrong though
