Wanting to take family to California on 12 day road trip. Fly into Reno stay night at Lake Tahoe. Drive to Yosemite (1-2 days), Sequoia (1 day), then back to Oakland/SF (1 night), drive Big Sur 17 mile drive find hotel on that route too LA. 2 days at Disneyland then to San Diego to fly home after Padres game my son’s favorite team. Have a 12 and 6 year old boys and a 1 year old. Boys have been on trips where we keep moving a lot. All 5 Utah parks and Colorado so they are good with driving. Am I missing any key stops. Any other routes better? I know backtracking after sequoia to Oakland but not sure how else to see the 2 parks and end up back on the coast. Really would like to add lassen but I don’t think I have time. Thanks

Why not hit King’s Canyon and route back through Fresno? Then, you can take backroads to Monterey so you can get to Big Sur.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the best in US. The adjacent wharf area is smaller and less crowded than Fisherman's in SF. 17 mile drive starts near the aquarium. Balboa Park in SD has many attractions.

What time of year are you planning. We have had a crazy snow season this year in the Sierras and Yosemite might not open fully until May or June

just a note on sequoia it might be the most kid friendly NP I’ve ever been to. The whole time we were there I was wishing I was 10 years old again LOL

Yosemite (1-2 days)

Yosemite is awesome, you will want two full days and you'll wish you had more.

Sequoia (1 day)

You can do this and Kings in one full day. They are great but you can do this in one day.

drive Big Sur

The drive from Carmel to Morro Bay is one of the best in the country. It is a half day drive with stops but could easily be almost a full day. You could stay in San Luis Obispo that night.

I was in SF two years ago and found it easy to get around by car. One thing to note while in SF is do not leave anything of value in your car. I have a couple friends who live there, and they said do not even leave sunglasses in plain sight while going in to buy gas or a coffee. I left nothing of value in my truck and had zero issues.

Driving in the mountains is not as simple as 100 miles will take me 1.5 hours. Keep that in mind, your trip plan sounds like some serious time in a car. I would not waste your time in SF or Oakland.

Monterey's aquarium is world class. Cutting through smaller towns in the valley is a good learning lesson. CA has a TON of agriculture that feeds people throughout the West/US.

Check the road closures on CA-1; I was looking into a similar trip recently and the various closures affected travel between several of the more popular spots on the coast road.
