20 Years Later…..

once the CFPNCG concludes, the prep for 2023 begins. And 2023 marks 20 years since LSU football started its journey to what we all know now as an established college football national power.
A Sooner fan posting about LSU’s 2003 national championship season? While it might seem odd, I’m a huge fan of the game and its history. I was 20 years old while with family and friends in New Orleans in January 2004. I was too young to truly realize how big of a deal this was, not only for LSU fans but for the state of Louisiana as a whole. As an OU fan, LSU was the enemy, and was hoping OU could find a way to salvage the season. LSU’s 21-14 win felt worse than a 7 point loss. My two highlights were the Larry Flynt Hustler Club with mannequin legs coming in and out of the building and Snoop Dogg in LSU gear doing a rap video pregame.
I’m sure the LSU faithful had many great memories throughout the year just as much as us OU fans did while returning to glory in 2000.
What are some of your favorite moments from the season that lead to the Crystal football? For anyone that experienced the 1958 season, what was 2003 like in comparison?
Also, 2004 Sugar Bowl loss was my first of three live national championship loss experiences. Louisianans know how to party and celebrate. Despite the loss, I had some nice memories.
Congrats on your SEC West title this season and hope you all continue to do well under BK.

I cannot forget that whole weekend.
Went to Deanies on Dauphine.
Heard some tiger fans say.
“LSU
USC
OKLAHOMA number three!”

I found myself in a bar in Lawton Oklahoma 3 years after that game while on a work trip. There were OU fans doing shots and saying a chant. At the end of the chant they all said frick LSU. I turned around and smiled . It was obvious 3 years after that game how bad it cut your fanbase. I’m 51 and that game was epic! I never thought that I would see LSU ever win a championship, and I’ve been blessed to see them win 3 so far. Classy post btw.

Thanks for the post. The moments that stand out for me were being in Tiger Stadium bc I ended up buying a single ticket for $80 seated next to random LSU fans for the UGA day game; the tenseness of watching the Ole Miss game on TV and the amazing trip up of Eli on 4th down to seal the win, and just the party in New Orleans leading up to the game and after the game.
Our seats were high up but positioned to see Skyler Green’s & Spears int touchdowns. I remember being nervous all second half because 7 points was not a large enough lead to be comfortable versus a Heisman QB.
When we realized we were going to win it is just one of those moments in life that is just too surreal and joyful and magical to ever forget. Being able to witness my school win a title in my lifetime was just one of the pinnacles of satisfaction.
I can only imagine how our players must have felt.

This might be one of my favorite posts ever.
When LSU was set to play in the BCS against OU, I bought tickets and hotel rooms for so many people. We were going to hang and enjoy.
I knew one OU fan at the time. At the time, but I met so many awesome and great OU fans during that week. We didn't know what to think of each other initially, but buying drinks and enjoying - one of the best experiences you could have.

Sorry you were in Lawton, even if for work. I tend to not talk crap on teams that beat mine when something huge is on the line, even years after it happened. Regular season losses to said team are different. But when a championship is up for grabs, talking crap to that team that handed you the loss doesn’t seem wise. We have some fans who are delusional by using our overall history as a way to defend anything happening today. There’s a reason why it’s called history. That “history” didn’t help in the 2019 Peach Bowl. But I’m sure there were still OU fans talking crap before that game as well. It’s just a given.

I was 11, I remember it well. I remember running outside yelling LSU at the neighbors across the street in celebration.

So many great moments from that season
The absolutely dominant defense - particularly Spears and Lavalais upfront, Marquise Hill over the middle (RIP) and lockdown secondary play by Corey Webster and company
Mauck to Skylar Green vs Georgia
Paying back Auburn and Bama after losses to both in 02
Trev Alberts screaming how Georgia would dominate us in the SECCG
So many Justin Vincent big runs in the back half of the season
The poise and confidence that team had vs any LSU team I’d ever witnessed before

The first quarter vs. a very good Auburn team had Tubberville exasperated when it was 21-0. The two massive drives @ USC of 20 and 16 plays (something like that) and the sheer domination of death by a thousand cuts mentality...

That was my first senior year at LSU. Watched the game with a friend of mine at his apartment in Sharlo, then we headed down to Nola after the game to party. Damn, to be 21 again. And to have my friend back. He was killed in a car crash 4 years later.

Thanks, baw. It was fun while it lasted that’s for sure.

Don’t know about ‘58 but 2003, LSU vs OU was the most fun, the FQ was lit! OU fans were alright.

Lived off S. Brightside and did the exact same thing, packed 7 people in a Honda Accord and went to the quarter.

That day was one of the best days of my life, as it was the last LSU game I would get to enjoy with my dad.
He was the best dad, my best friend, and a diehard LSU fan. He was dying from Pulmonary Fibrosis and even though we couldn’t go to the game we enjoyed watching so much together.
He never thought he would live to see them win but he did.
He passed away in March of 2004.

I was 17 and went to bourbon with some buddies. We were telling bouncers one of my friends was Jack Hunt and actually got into a few places.

Good write up
Have always respected OU
It’s a shame the way Riley left but it may be for the best because he can’t win the big game
Hope to play y’all again down the road once you get it turned around
