I realize this is possibly a naive question, but given the hopelessness of a Dem speaker, the voting record of McCarthy, and the uniparty allegations, wouldn't McCarthy be a best case for them?

They’re waiting to nominate a least objectionable candidate and wait for a few panty waist republicans to vote for a dem. It’s going to happen.

Short term, because they are generally more concerned with Twitter narratives and media gotchas than anything substantive.

Long term, they know that if they did so, he would be replaced within a year by someone farther to the right. They want him to win, but recognize that aiding him in doing so would shorten his tenure and empower the conservatives.

Why would they bail them out? The longer this shitshow goes the better for them.

Can't see this happening. Those people run every two years.

I really don’t think so. They know that any such person would be removed as soon as a party-line issue arose in normal session.

They’re almost as stuck in a lose-lose as McCarthy is. They will win the short term media suck fest, but this whole ordeal will result in a more conservative Speaker. Jeffries isn’t an idiot. He knows that.

Only those interested in politics care about this and even then only needs like us. 90% of Americans don’t even know this is going on.

They are waiting till McCarthy to give into the 20 about how many votes it takes to try and impeach. They will then let him win and every day try and impeach for the optics. It will also hold up investigations.

They care about their party fracturing and turning into two groups, one lead by loons (Boebert, Gaetz) who are wildly unlikable.

If they don’t find a way to unify (and it sure as shite isn’t giving way to some tiny minority) they’re going to get murdered in the next election.

So again, why would Ds help?

the ideal D scenario involves brokering the recently retired Republican to be speaker. 75 dems. 150 R.

mccarthy cant be speaker.
dems say no.
20 say no.
the No's have it.

he is too closely associated with his j6 double talk and Pilgrimage to kiss the arse.

Gaetz is in the top 5 of Congress right now.

In the future though, this board will say all that and no cattle.

The moderate members of the GOP are already having concerns about the rules changes he is having to give to make a deal. They aren’t going to sign on to someone further right.

Why can’t Kevin McCarthy pretend he won? Republicans love that sort of thing.

They win either way.

McCarthy wins nothing changes. They are happy.

Anyone else wins it fractures the republican party (from the Dem perspective) and they win next election easily. They are happy.
