I'm a sleep junkie. Those that sleep 8 hours or more per night, what works for you?

I'm in the camp that there is nothing better you can do for your health than get 8 hours of sleep per night.

Over the last few years I have optimized all I could and have gone from averaging 5 1/2 hours per night to now 6 3/4 hours per night.

There is not much I would not do or try to get this number to 8.

I don't have stress of any kind
I work out or do yoaga daily
Bought a new bed
clean diet

What has worked for you? If you track it, what do your statistics look like?

I'm only getting around 1 hour of REM per night as well and I've read 2 hours is optimial.

I used to burn the midnight oil all of the time. Now that I'm older, I'm in bed at 9 pm and wake up anywhere from 4:30 am to 6:30 am. My body has changed and I'm able to quickly go to sleep without issue. Staying up later results in my having headaches and sluggishness the following day. So, routine works for me.

I usually get at minimum 8 hours. Most nights I get 9 hours. When I was tracking sleep with a whoop, I’d get like 2 hours of REM and 1 to 2 hours of deep sleep. I really don’t do anything special. I find if I don’t go to sleep when I’m tired, I frick up my rhythm and will be up all night.

Just saw something about the importance of morning sunshine to circadian Rhythms and sleep cycle. Basically said to get as much direct sunlight at possible (not behind glass) before 10am. Suggested at least 10-15 minutes of full sun exposure. No clue if it’s valid or not, but worth a try.

I get 7-9 a night.
I have to have it cold, pitch black, ceiling fan, box fan, watch tv until I get sleepy, turn the tv off and say prayers until I fall asleep.

Also a super comfortable bed and pillow. Foam mattress topper. Medium-firm pillow.

Try adding some morning sunlight 10-15 minutes as soon as it is up and evening sunlight right before it goes down.

Sleeping is my best skill (maybe my only one)

Avoid caffeine after noon

Avoid alcohol after noon

Avoid light after 8 (particularly bright overhead lights or screens)

Try to get bright, natural light in your eyes when you wakeup

Keep your bedroom as cold as possible

Have a routine you perform nightly before bed to assist the brain in learning when it’s time to turn off

If you exercise, try to do it earlier in the day if possible and avoid evening workouts

Supplementing magnesium and l-theanine can help relax the body and mind

Magnesium supplements have worked for me in the past, but I’ve been struggling lately. Stress and anxiety creep up on me almost at a subconscious level. I have to dig deep to even realize I’m stressed, but when it’s there, I don’t sleep.

I wish I had a solution but when the source of stress is the workload of having a job, side income, wife, and kids, it seems impossible.

Working out has really helped me. Does not matter if it is cardio or weights, I just need to feel physically tired.

Melatonin.

Helps me fall asleep, but doesn't make me groggy.

To be completely honest, I always felt like I was tossing and turning and struggling to fall asleep. I tried melatonin and it helped somewhat.

But, lately I've been taking those Delta 9 herb edibles and they have the effects of regular weed, allowing me to fully relax before bed and then fall asleep very quickly when I'm ready. As long as you don't take too much/take it too late at night, you won't be too groggy in the morning either.

I’m not even going to try to flex. I get 7-8 and if I don’t I hate my life. The dudes who sleep 3 hours a night have to be miserable.

6-8 hours a night for me depending what time I can get to the gym. Closer to the 6 hour mark on days when I’m up at 4:45. Closer to 8 hours on an afternoon workout day.

My keys are going to bed within 30 mins of the same time everyday. No or minimal caffeine after noon. Magnesium and melatonin supplements. Drink plenty of water during the day so you aren’t chugging to hit your water intake goals right before you get in bed. Don’t try and sleep on a full belly. Quality food also helps.

I track with Whoop so I have figured out things that help and hurt with it. The no brainer to avoid is alcohol. It wrecks recovery every time.

Use bed for sleep and sex only

No caffeine in the afternoon. People think only drinks but it’s also in chocolate

Sunlight within first 30 minutes of waking

No phone or iPad within an hour of bedtime

Try to sweat every day. Get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes.

I use magnesium and 1mg melatonin every night and works like a charm

From experience, it’s only “miserable” if you try to do active things. Working out, socializing, initiating sex with the missus - that’s when it hits you that you’re a zombie. Rolling through the motions of the day is more numbing than painful.

I do feel like a superhero when I sleep at least 7 hours. I wish I could figure out my issue.

It's amazing the difference between just 5 hours and 7 hours of sleep.

Maybe a few times per year I will hit 8 hours and I feel like a god the next day.
