Davidson is undergrad small college north of Charlotte. About 4k students. Except for basketball the athletic complexes are not good. Great school to have a degree from.

I graduated from Washington and Lee. Nearly half of my fraternity brothers were football players. Most of them went on to successful business careers. One of my roommates was captain of the football team and ended up at Harvard Business School.

I loved living in Lexington. Small town where we walked everywhere. I had a car but sometimes I would go weeks without using it.

We turkey hunted before class and fly fished in the afternoons. It was pretty idyllic.

The School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics "nicknamed the C School" is world renowned. At one time we produced more CEOs as a percentage of the student body than any other institution in the country. I don't know if that's still true but you get the point.

The kids who graduate from the C School get their pick of the top investment banking jobs at graduation.

Thanks, all. Helpful.

Son has strong gpa / ACT / class rank / general academic resume and is interested in playing football at specific, high reputation academic schools. Has football opportunities at higher football division, incl. D1, but none with strong academic reputations. Football is not the ticket but loves it. This is about academics (bonus is football opp).

Insights provided here are appreciated!

I dated someone from William and Mary for awhile. Excellent school…she was involved in Greek life there but I generally found the student population to be pretty strange. She didn’t love her experience there but it was a great academic opportunity.

I visited Elon when looking at schools in high school. It was a nice place and I liked the atmosphere but it didn’t have strong enough academics to justify the spend (versus others I was considering).

Washington and Lee and Davidson are top notch academically…can’t go wrong with either of those as long as the size of the school is acceptable.

Then I would choose W&M. Good academics. Nice campus full of high achievers. Not really a good party scene.
Mike London has taken over the football program and they will be National title contenders next year.

Richmond and JMU don’t have the academic cache.
Lots of history in the local area.

If you're looking for the educational opportunities presented by each of these universities I would highly recommend Washington & Lee and Elon. If he's planning on a career in government, then James Madison would prove beneficial on his resume.

The BEST school out of all of these by a long shot. I've lived in Richmond area for the past 30 years. Know many W&M grads and they are all among the best people.

They may not have as strong a program as JMU, but he will get a way better education.

Notable alumni are Thomas Jefferson and Joe Brady.

JMU has the best football program out of those.

William and Mary and Davidson are the best schools

When I think of contributions to our nation, these are the 1st 2 names I think of.

Of course, would be remis if left out Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Ed Orgeron.

Visited Elon w my daughter who now attends TCU. I’ll just say that I was triggered during our visit to Elon. I wanted to tell MAGA and send our your guide scurrying to her safe space to color and eat tootsie rolls. Elon is a liberal’s wet dream.

My employee’s daughter played on a tennis scholarship at JMU. As a parent, she was pleased with the experience there. My daughter applied there but TCU was a better fit for her. It was in her top 5.

Richmond may be one of the most progressive cities in the country. We avoided the uni for that reason alone.

Can’t speak to the others.

My son looked at the same schools a few years ago for baseball.
Richmond was nice, Spiders, greatest nickname ever. Small school though, like smaller than most New Orleans private 5A schools.

Davidson was cool too, but without a business college that sucks.

really any of those are great schools if you can swing the cash that you will be on the hook for.

I can’t believe the number of uneducated idiots in here recommending schools bc of certain politics. And bc of northerners?

Some people are definitely made for shift work in a factory

But you know the northern part of the state is solid left and it dominates. Plus Richmond is prog too. RIP Monument Ave.

Hell, it won’t be long before UVA sheds all ties to Thomas Jefferson.

Go visit the schools. W&L is a good school but in the middle of nowhere. William & Mary is not quite as remote but still hard to get to. Davidson, once a small town, is now basically a suburb of Charlotte and an easy direct flight to CLT from most places. It's a great school, D1 in all sports except football.

Can't speak to the others, never been, although Elon and JMU are not academically comparable to the ones discussed above.
