Will be leaving Sat for 4 days on Maui and 5 on Kauai. We have never been to Hawaii so this is a big deal for us. I have a decent plan for Maui but need recs for things to do while on Kauai. Any suggestions?
Maui - Staying om west side just a little north of Lahaina (Napili-Honokowai).Planning a full day on Road to Hana and then will do sunrise at Haleakala and possible bike down (depending on weather)
Kauai - Staying om east coast near Kapa'a. Plan to drive to Waimea Canyon but that about it so far
Any suggestions?
Also - any tips for that long arse flight there (9.5 hrs) appreciated too

I've only been to Kauai
- do the helicopter tour it is amazing and worth every penny
- Waimea Canyon is very cool but don't be surprised if you drive all the way over there and it's just fog
- eat at Jo2 in Kapaa, it's awesome

When I was there in early December a few years ago, the fog pretty regularly came in at the same time each day, and you just needed to get there before it came in. (I don't remember what time.)

Are you going to hike any of the Kalalau Trail? To hike the full 11-mile trail requires a camping permit, but anyone can hike the stunning first two miles of the trail with just a day pass.
Do you think I should I reserve the shuttle or drive and hope to catch a parking spot on a day trip to the north shore?

I went in December 2019 and was probably the first one up there. Couldn't see shite at Kalalau lookout. Frustrating because it was sunny beyond the fog to the beach but every time a window almost opened, more fog. Could see more on my way back down. A parking attendant actually gave different advice and suggested later in the day was better. I imagine it's dumb luck at times.

I second the helicopter tour in Kauai. It was breathtaking.

I'm not sure, because I was there in 2016, and I don't think that the shuttle existed back then.
I will say that you'll be hiking 2 miles in to Hanakapiai Beach, you can spend a bit of time resting and enjoying the beach, and then you'll hike the 2 miles back out. And the hike is not flat at all.

I'd bet the shuttle may be booked up by now. He's going to have to hit the website.
One of those helicopter tours crashed when I was there as well, so I'm spooked.

Honestly not sure since this was 4 years ago, I'd get reservation just to be safe since it was on the small side

Review these books & apps beforehand (they have one for every island & are available on Amazon), they are a great resource:

Interesting. They seemed to be a hot ticket before COVID and Hawaii was super popular last couple years so figured it would be all booked up.

If you are looking for a good dinner with a great location go to Merriman's. Honolua Bay is a great snorkel spot.

trust me if you are doing the road to Hana make sure you start early like 7 am early and definitely download this and you won't be sorry. Tells about stops along the way and alot of Maui history, restaurants(there aren't many), waterfalls, etc. Just download the app and when you start your trip play it and enjoy. Shaka app
Enjoy
Eta: Going to be a little stressful especially the one lane bridges and the locals driving crazy but this app plays local music that chills you out and the scenery is amazing.
