Girls typically do things for 2 reasons:

1. to be like others girls
2. for attention

This is the current generation's version of getting your belly button pierced for your 15th birthday. They'll get over it by adulthood but unfortunately, some of them will have permanent physical and hormonal damage instead of a hole in their belly button.
