NYC Subway

Anybody been recently and used the subway? We head that way in a couple of weeks and had every intention of using the subway as a mode of transportation, especially considering we are staying near the Brooklyn Bridge. Along with my family, we are traveling with my parents and in-laws (age 60's) and they are insistent on everything they see and read says not to take the subway because of crime. We have traveled a lot and know to wary of our surroundings, but wondering if this is just reading too much into the news or it is truly unsafe right now.

I was there this summer and took it even after midnight from Manhattan to Brooklyn and it's very safe. There was an obvious police presence at most stations. If youve never used the subway then read about how to use it including the Uptown vs Downtown train directions, it can be confusing.
Friend who is a pro photographer was there last week walking around with thousands of dollars of equipment at all hours and never had a problem.

I took it all over in April and October. Security more obvious in October, but I never felt unsafe. Just be aware.

We used it at Thanksgiving. Safe. Like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings.

This turns getting from one part of Manhattan to the other into a 1+ hour ordeal that will cost well north of $150 for 6 people.

I took the subway everywhere when I was in New York. It felt completely safe the whole time. However, because I was unfamiliar with the area I used Uber or walked for late night travels.
I would like more insight into L train between Manhattan and Brooklyn late at night though. After 2AM.

My thoughts exactly. We used to travel to NYC a lot and always used the subway. Haven’t been in roughly 10 years though, so was unsure of how much has changed. FIL has a cousin that lives in Connecticut, but travels to city a bunch who was adamant to not take subway. I’m not too worried now. We can play it by ear depending on how they feel. We may just stick to day use but take Uber/cab in evening if necessary to appease them.

It's fine. You'll see some crazys for sure, just mind your business, don't make eye contact, and be aware of whats happening around you.

Was there earlier this month with my wife and two boys (6 & 7). We used the Subway to go everywhere and had no issues. Using your phone to pay made getting in and going so easy.

I take it every week. Your biggest issue will likely be with your parents and in-laws if they have any mobility issues. Not all stations have elevator access, so quite a few stairs may be involved.
Otherwise, I would just be aware of your surroundings.

This is a very good point. I carried a stroller up way too many stairs at some stations.

Just took NJ transit connecting to LIRR at Penn Station and had no issues. I know it's not the subway but a long the same lines, zero issues. The usual homeless sleeping in Penn station
