Would we really still suck if not for Saban?

I respect the man, think he is a great coach, appreciate the NC, understand why he left, why he went to Bama, and have no ill will toward him, but I'm tired of the comments from our own fans and elsewhere that "LSU would still be an SEC cellar dweller if not for him."
Bull to the shite. Gerry Dinardo had a 10 win and a 9 win season here. Gerry fricking Dinardo, people. If he hadn't stuck by that asshat Tepper he would have had more. LSU was pretty damn good before Hallman, too. If not Saban, somebody else would have taken the recruiting potential from Louisiana and kicked some arse.
So STFU about LSU sucking if not for Saban.
Thus endeths Alatgr's annual rant.

blame saban for everyone freaking out over two losses so far. he set the bar rather high.

i have always said LSU had just as much to do with saban's success as saban had to do with LSU's.
all you had to do was get the louisiana players to stay home.

An excellent question, I'm not really sure.
Nick changed the entire attitude of the football program, I'm not sure who else could have done that.

catastrophe syndrome. people freaked out with saban too.

LSU's path was not leading that direction before Saban.

Depends on who we would have otherwise gotten. Willingham for example would not have done well. Nick is a good coach and great recruiter, but he's not the only fish in the sea.

People forget that Saban lobbied his agent to approach LSU about the head coaching vacancy. Saban knew that LSU had all of the resources (tradition, massive stadium, dedicated fanbase, and most importantly a tremendous recruiting base) that were required to create a juggernaut. There was a reason that LSU was historically referred to as a "sleeping giant."

I was as unhappy that he left as any LSU fan, but face it, he's good at his job. His record speaks for itself; like him or not.

If not for Nick we'd possibly be still fighting for that first West Division title, have some 9-3 maybe 10-2 seasons, but not quite getting over the hump. LSU being a "sleeping giant" is very accurate pre-Saban.

Obviously Nick isn't the only one who could have resurrected LSU football. However, there are a lot of big time programs that had better records than LSU in the twenty years prior to Saban who still are looking for that type leader. Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Miami come to mind.
Saban is special. Every college program where he has been involved showed dramatic improvement once he installed his players and system.

If not Nicky, I'm sure that some other LSU head coach would've been shamed into winning a championship by Skip and the baseball team.

NO, I pretty much give all the credit to Saban for LSU's success in the since 2000....he is the reason why LSU is where it is today!

I agree.
The guy's a damned good coach and even a better recruiter and evaluator of talent.

don't forget how he spearheaded the upgrade in facilities started under Dinardo. Who knows, maybe Nick could not have had the success Les has had, but he definitely turned things around.

A lot of you guys are selling the man short. Just look what he's done at Bama. Is it a coiencident that he took LSU and Bama from the shithouse to a top tier level? No. He's good. He's damn good. Don't give me this "He just kept the talent home" crap. Bama doesn't have as much talent as LA, yet he's still doing hsi thing for Bama. The man can recruit and coach. Period.

Most likely yes.

Saban set the framework for success for you, he's doing it for us now.
It's hard to imagine the Mad Hatter winning a nc had he started back in 2000.

I have know Saban since 2002 and he is one of the best coaches in America but more importantly he actually does care about the players. He might seem like a hard arse but he gets the most out of his players and has them play up to their potiential as long as the players follow his way of doing it.

CrimsonFinchA, stay over in Al. Don't come on an LSU board and tell us about Miles. You don't even begin to understand the dynamics that led to the success under Saban. A lot of them you spoiled Bamers will never understand, because they were put in place way before most of you were born. You may have the best coach. Maybe there is just one Saban. I don't think so! His success has a lot to do with Alabama, and now Miles success will have a lot to do with LSU. I'm not going to go into detail, just understand you are not going to kick LSU around anymore, nor anyone else in the SEC. Things have changed since you've been away. There's next year. And the year after, and so on. For example , look at Saban's 03 and 04 LSU teams.
