I think most of the problems with the word are due to the success of neoliberalism and free trade leading to a massive increase in democracy worldwide. You're going to get many different flavors as a result, but in 100 years it went form a small minority of the world to basically everywhere in the world.

A few World Wars and decolonialization helped, too.

I think the 'Jump the Shark' moment was the moment it became vogue to refer to anyone who doesn't politically align with you in any way or for any reason as a "threat to democracy."

At least that's pretty much when I decided that this word is now void of pretty much any functional meaning.
