Look at it like an SEC head football coach.
You're 65-3 vs. the likes of New Mexico State, Tulsa and Alabama A&M? Congrats.
But if you're also 4-14 vs. SEC/Big 10 foes...you won't be around long unless you're at Vanderbilt.

Likewise, candidates in deep blue states were going to win anyway but the races were much closer than usual.
