Why don’t states use an electoral college style system for elections?

The small population, rural counties afre effectively meaningless in many states.

Why not model their votes after the EC? Or are they prohibited from doing so?

I assume you mean for governors only?

I still don't like the idea

Because States don’t want to.

Could you imagine the gerrymandering that would take place?

Why do you want them to be over-represented?

If a state wants to do that, it can. States run elections, which is why we're still waiting on NV and AZ, and Murkowski won in Alaska. Different states. Different rules.

I'd go for that. Would prevent big city Dems from choosing state leaders despite never seeing an unpaved road.

Are smaller states over represented with the national EC and is that a bad thing?

Why. Now they are under represented. The needs out in the rural areas of a state are vastly different than in the cities. Do you think the needs of Places like Coushatta in Red River Parrish are the same as in Baton Rouge or New Orleans.

That’s why we have EC for presidential election. Otherwise New York and California would basically pick the president every time. Do you think they have the same issues and needs of Iowa or Kansas or Wyoming or West Virginia.
The EC was one of the smartest ideas our founding fathers had.

Sure wish they had thought of term limits.

If states used an electoral system, Democrats would never win an election outside of San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland.

I've wondered the same thing. Win a few burroughs in NYC and win NY; the rest of the state be damned.

My Yorkie and I could have counted the votes in most of these House races by now. Then you want to complicate it further by tossing the EC in there?

I like each county gets one vote.

That ship has sailed. It would likely require a change in the States constitution which usually requires a higher than 50% threshold (might be 60 or 70%, depending on state). The big city voters would never vote to change it nowadays even if they tried. Had they done it 200 years ago it might have passed.

But their populations are also vastly different.

No, but what does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

I imagine you vote Republican pretty often, saying this.

They just want to rig more elections in their perceived group's favor. Nobody has given a real explanation as to why this is good.

nebraska and Maine do something you may see as like your idea.

nebraska gives 1 ev to Omaha. and ev to two more rural slices.
Maine gives 1 ev to the thin slice of coastal villages and a couple cities and 1 ev to the rural 85% of the state area of mountain and farm.

otto they're talking about intrastate EC-style systems
