Hanny explained this and it makes sense with the new OT rules.

Will likely come down to a 2-pt attempt anyway and when going second in the first OT, it disallowed Bama from being able to answer.

Pretty much. You're gonna have to go for 2 the next OT anyway. Might as well use your best play to win rather than tie.

Bama’s best player was helpless on the sideline while LSU decided the outcome of the game. Pretty smart move id say.

1OT is old school
2OT is old way plus 2pt try
3OT+ is 2pt try only

I think you will see this more going forward with the new OT rules. 2nd overtime becomes a disadvantage because you switch to offense first. Then you have to go for 2 point plays, and probably only have a limited number of 2 point offensive plays you want to rely on . so using your best one first and with a chance to win instead of going to less favorable plays with only chances to tie makes sense.

So stupid. Just put them at the 50 and make them earn it. You wouldn't get 5OTs then.

OT or not, for me the philosophy of any good coach is if you have the chance to win the game you take it every time. That is what you play for. Kicking to tie the game is meaningless, and doesn't show much confidence in your players or play calling ability.

Of course, there could be a rare circumstance that might override that decision, an example being, a momentary injury to a player on one team or the other.

I can't imagine any player not wanting to win the game when they could. A coach choosing not to would seem deflating to me.

As has already been said, you have to go for two the next OT anyways. Why not use your best play when you have the chance.

I really think it was basically Kelly telling the sec and Saban particularly, " I'm here"

Kelly did say after the game, if you tell me I have one play to beat Saban, I'll take it 100 out of 100 times

Hanny's point was that if you have a 2 pt play you have confidence in might as well use it FTW instead of saving it for a tie.

I thought Saban was foolish for going to 2 instead of taking the extra point in the fourth quarter. It came back and bit him. Bc that last FG would’ve won it instead of tied it for Bama.
