Wife and I want to take two adult kids and their spouses on a trip to kick off the new year. We were going to green in June but just found out one is preggo with our first grand baby and won’t be able to travel in June. So we are moving it up to Jan. Whatcha got???

I mean pretty obviously somewhere in the Caribbean or Central America would be easy.

Hawaii, South Pacific, Australia etc if you want to spend a lot more and go further.

Caribbean and Central American destinations can depend largely on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Wife is looking into the Virgin Islands as we’ve never been. We’ve done the western Caribbean enough that I’d rather skip that.

Antigua, Barbados, Nevis, St Kitts, USVI, BVI

Something in that region. Looking for recommendations.

Yeah, do y'all want to sit on a nice beach, drink, and soak up some rays, or do you want to go hiking, snorkeling, tour historic and cultural sites, etc.?

So, beach yes but not everyday. Snorkeling maybe scuba (for beginners) hiking, historic tours etc all sound fun. We can end the day of start the day beachside or poolside. Would like to spend less than 10k without airfare

Sounds like St. John in the USVI would be perfect for you. You can hike and snorkel at the National Park and hit up a different beach every day. You can also wander around the old sugar mill ruins for the historic part of your trip.

I think y'all would like Barbados. I'd stay at the Hilton or Radisson on Carlisle Bay. It's just a perfect beach, with great snorkeling from shore or a short boat trip, with wrecks and turtles. The Hilton is closer to the wrecks and the better snorkeling, but I think the beach near the Radisson is a little prettier.

You can tour the house where George Washington lived as a teenager, see Harrison Cave, tour a rum distillery, visit a botanical garden, etc.

Barbados is safe and has a great culture. I'd really enjoy going back.

Download the app "Escape" on iOS. It color codes everything all over the world (good deal/bad deal). You can select duration of stay and time period (2-11 days next month, for instance) for your search.

Costa Rica is always a place I suggest, honeymooned there. It's odd how there (at least on the resorts) is nearly no risk there, but you travel a bit to Honduras, or even Cancun, and the situation changes radically. In Honduras, you can try Roatan, which is an island off the coast. Seemed very safe, and you can get a villa and a private cook for cheap to make dinners, etc. Just don't try to buy a mango at the grocery, everyone will be confused as to why you're trying to pay for something that literally falls into your lap on the street.

I've never been, but I also think the St. John suggestions are great. I'd also like to throw out the idea of San Juan, Puerto Rico. You can stay on the beach and see all kinds of historical stuff and enjoy a unique culture, and you could take a daytrip to El Yunque to hike in the only US National Forest that's a true rainforest.

Take into account the season as well; there are many places in the Caribbean I can't fly to from Houston without going through Newark during certain months. I know it's ridiculous, but it's something you have to pay attention to. IAH flies *everywhere* direct in Central and South America, except when it doesn't.

You really don't want an adults trip to the Caribbean to turn into a trip to Europe with layovers, etc. Nonstop or bust. For you people from LA, that means you hit IAH, HOU, or MIA to connect, and that is it. Tops.

At least three of you need to sign up for Priority Pass, so you can get drunk in a lounge before getting on the plane (assuming 1 guest per member.) You get that with certain credit cards (Chase Ultimate, etc). Do not buy drinks on the plane. Do not buy drinks on the plane.

There will be beer when you land. The bus driver to the resort will offer to stop to buy you beer in most countries on the way to the resort.

Tip whomever your beer dude/chick is heavy the day you get there, and they will move other people off the schedule to make sure they have your beers ready at the beach when you arrive (h/t my friend from WBR.)

I'd probably go with a 7 day lower Caribbean cruise. We took one that went to St Johns, BVI, Tortola, etc and it's really nice there. Good food with stuff to do. Different ports each day with a guided snorkeling trips etc.

A cruise will cost you about as much as just the resort would which saves you on food and airfare. That's how they always get us anyway. It's the cheapest option and if you bring a group it's always fun. Unless they go full on idiot again for a few years. In that case you'll have to stay on their boat indefinitely confined to your room. Let's hope that's not the case
