Deer Island for the win. Unless modern electricity and indoor plumbing is an issue. And then there’s the part where you’re not technically allowed to build on the island anymore. But I’m sure you can get a permit.

To 3/22 I paid $1,105 for that past year. Don’t have the newest one. Homeowners is $4,500 for this year I think…for wind/fire/theft…
I’m ~25’ above sea level and on third block from the beach.

I am checking BSL out too. There are few homes around $500K that I will look at. Are the public schools better or worse there than Pass Christian?

Bay high school is a solid public school that gets overlooked. I would have zero issue sending my kid to Bay. It's also a smaller school than most on the coast.

Thanks! We landed yesterday in New Orleans and MSY is a dumpster fire. The traffic there in NO was horrendous as well. But as soon as we got out of town it was much less stressful. Stopped at Shaggy's at Pass Harbor and everyone is incredibly nice as expected. We are going to the pep rally and football game tonight in OS. That should be an immersive experience.
Everyone keep their fingers crossed for me that my daughter loves it.

But that water looks really calm. not glassy but definitely could SUP there.
You can paddleboard up and down the shoreline in the sound or at the islands. It's well suited for it. However, I would advise against swimming off the beaches anywhere along Harrison/Hancock counties. Some people will do it, but it's not wise. Kids can walk in the water and look for seashells and whatnot, but it's best they wear rubber boots. Once you get out a ways in (jetski or boat) and the water deepens you don't have to worry about cutting your foot on something- that can be bad news.
When you get well offshore the water gets cleaner and the salinity increases. The sound is home to hundreds of bottlenose dolphins and is thriving with marine life. Water on the south sides of Ship, Horn, and Petit Boi islands are fine for swimming, snorkeling or whatever. But I would recommend doing it when the water temps aren't extremely warm, e.g. spring and early summer months. That goes for anywhere on the northern gulf.
Fyi- there are daily ferries to Ship Island from a couple of different locations in Biloxi/Gulfport that run on a seasonal schedule.

I’m sorry I can’t comment much on living there, but my wife and I visit Pass Christian 2-3 times a year. We Stop at cat island coffee house in the morning for good breakfast and a couple of books for the beach, find an area with a dune between the water and the highway so we cant see/hear the road, then sit all day reading books and napping. It’s a great/quick getaway for us and we inevitably talk about moving there.

Wow. The OS pep rally and game really was incredible. My daughter is in love. The people here… it’s so hard to describe. I wish this wasn’t the OT so I could post pics. The cheer squad took to my daughter and she ended up with their Pom pons cheering in the stands right in front of them. I had forgotten the fun of a HS football team.
Looked at home in Bienville Place I like and a few in GulfPark. There is a neighborhood north of Bienville that was older that I liked too. The homes were cheaper and it clearly allowed boat and RV parking but it felt homey and the house had survived multiple storms. Today we check out Long Beach and Pass but I think OS has my daughters heart.
My only negative is the water. It’s pretty to look at but it’s not the gulf I know, love and grew up on. Maybe we still use it? Locals are telling me no. But we shall see. This move is for my family not just me.

Thought you’d love OS. One plus about OS Beach is that it’s not as public since it’s not off a major highway. People use the water just fine for watersports and entertainment. Hopefully you got to check out the downtown area, the crown jewel of the city, during your visit.

Just wanted to again thank everyone for their help. We are making an offer tomorrow on a home there and the kindness of the people in OS is equal to the kindness everyone here showed. My husband is flying down to check things out soon as well. If anyone has any suggestions for things he should see while there, let us know! The OT always pulls through when it matters
